Pesto and nut allergy

I've noticed that a lot of Mums rave about pesto. I've never tried it because it contains pinenuts and because DH has a severe nut allergy, DTS have never been given any nut products (they are 2yo 11 months).

If I made a thick tomato sauce using tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic and basil, would that be similar to pesto but without the nuts? Or do you need nuts to have the unique taste of pesto?

You can just use sundried tomatoes, garlic, basil and parmesan cheese blended with olive oil to make sundried tomato pesto. You can also just make pesto without pine nuts if you want.

Thank you!

Another question please, is pesto served hot or cold? I've never used it before! I want to try making the sundried version.

You just stir it into hot pasta. No need to heat it first.

Thanks again!
