Is there such a thing as instant rice?

Dd has now moved onto lumpier foods. Baby rice is not lumpy! So any suggestions for instant rice, as do not want to boil 3 teaspoons of rice for dd's tea, and rice isn't safe to freeze

Anyone?

use mashed potato instead

marthamoo · 18/01/2007 14:10

You can buy scahets of microwaveable rice - but it would still be way too much for a baby.

I think you can buy bags of frozen rice...I think you can.

Notquitesotiredmum · 18/01/2007 14:12

White basmati rice cooks really really quickly.

You can freeze rice, I'm sure you can. My friend at school was thai and her dad used to freeze it all the time - and she was always ok

moondog · 18/01/2007 14:53

I freeze rice all the time.Cook some for all of you and just give the baby a bit.
Don't be faffing with tiny portions.

Enid · 18/01/2007 14:54

seriousl though

why rice?

theres loads of other things you can give

what about couscous?

MrsBadger · 18/01/2007 14:56

Rice freezes fine.

I'm lazy though so would only do rice for her if the rest of us were having it for tea too - the rest of the time she'd get pasta / mash / bread / whatever carb was on for dinner...

MrsBadger · 18/01/2007 14:56

ah yes, now couscous is instant.

I bought a bag of frozen rice with some veg mixed in (peas and sweetcorn I think) from M&S when I was weaning my youngest. Lasts for ages and you just defrost how much you want in the microwave.

DizzyBint · 18/01/2007 14:58

i have seen bags of frozen rice in the supermarket. i guess you would just microwave the amount you want.

but like the others have said, i would only do rice if you're having rice anyway, otherwise it's just a faff. if you're having spuds, give spuds.

fizzbuzz · 18/01/2007 15:09

Wow! Thanks for all help. Have used couscous, but made her something with coconut milk in, and wanted rice to go with it.

I posted on here about freezing rice about a month or so ago, and the general opinion was that frozen rice was spawn of the devil!! Checked with HV who said don't freeze rice as can breed nasty bacteria!

I freeze rice all the time. The main risk is if you leave it around at room temperature for a while and then freeze it as the resulting bugs are not killed by reheating. Having said that, I do this all the time and so far have not suffered. reheating rice

sunnywong · 18/01/2007 15:17

I freeze rice all the time

don't really, I just wanted to be able to say that for once in my life

the bloody rice cooker is never off in MIL's kitchen so there would be no point

I freeze rice too. If I am cooking it I nearly always do double thee amount we need. The half we don't eat I cool down quickly by running cold water over it while it is in the colander. I then freeze it in small portions for ds to eat when he at the childminder (I prepare all his food)

Ds loves rice so this is one way he can have it even if it isn't freshly cooked there and then.

fizzbuzz · 18/01/2007 21:01

Well looks like I'll be going for the big freeze then.

Thanks for help.

Lazycow, love the name!
