I don't like chips, I just want broccoli

I'm not complaining but good grief I have weird kids. Tonight as I just didn't have the energy to make them supper, I bought them some ready-made very nice looking haddock fish cakes and they got a few oven chips (a novelty in this house) plus broccoli.

Both of them (aged 3 and 16 months), refused the chips, ate a few mouthfuls of the fishcakes, scoffed the broc and demanded more. Literally they were whining saying: I don't like chips. I just want broccoli.

Not every child is like Max Wilde - but apparently mine are. Long may it last.

Mine are like that too - DD thinks the world should be full of sweetcorn and trees (broccoli)

Piffle · 16/01/2007 17:17

dd often eats only the broccoli

itsmeNDP · 16/01/2007 17:19

None of my kids like chips either, but none of them are particularly enamoured with veggies

misdee · 16/01/2007 17:19

dd3 is like this. she finished off a serving dish of brocolli at MIL house over xmas.

JoshandJamie · 16/01/2007 17:28

How weird are kids these days? When I was little I thought broccoli was the devil.

I should add that the day before Christmas we went for a pub lunch and the little one refused his sausage and mash with peas - instead he opted for my side order of veg and proceeded to polish off the brussel sprouts, popping them into his mouth as though they were chocolate buttons. And they were mega overcooked and revolting.

Just the sort of thing mine would say. He wanted more sprouts rather than roast potatoes one day.

Weatherwax · 16/01/2007 18:55

My dd1 used to be like this. Before the age of 3 she ate lots of brocoli, now at 8 she can't believe it and would run screaming from the room if I put any on her plate. Her sister, now 5, enjoys waving her greens at her sister and hasn't gone the same way yet.

I cook for two nurseries and broccoli is always a winner. As are homemade potato wedges.

Miaou · 16/01/2007 19:05

My two dds were not that keen on broccoli until we told them to pretend they were giraffes eating the leaves off the trees, then pretend they were elephants eating the trunks. Still works several years later

Mine love broccoli but they love chips too!

Twiglett · 16/01/2007 19:12

mine are like that .. ds still leaves chips on his plate at nearly 6 but will never leave broccoli or carrots

JoshandJamie · 16/01/2007 19:27

So why then do you suppose that whenever you see kids menus anywhere they feature chips, chips, chips and nuggets of some description with beans. Why the hell don't they add broccoli, carrots and peas to the mix??

Probably because they don't know how to cook them and boil them to mush.

Sloppy, overcooked broccoli and any other veg is not appealing at all and puts children off veg for life, IME.

I agree. Restaurants could serve raw carrots etc instead?

LunarSea · 16/01/2007 19:44

trees (brocolli) and clouds (cauliflower) are ds's favourite too. Glad to find he's not quite so weird after all.

dingdongjustforyoufg · 16/01/2007 19:56

My DTs are the same, will leave roast potatoes in favour of cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli and in the summer DT2 polished off all her broad beans, all those left in the serving dish plus as many as she could get her hands on from other peoples' plates, yet today, when given some chocolate after nursery she gave it back saying she didn't want it DT1 although v good at veg is a right pudding monster too so not totally weird

Rubybees · 16/01/2007 20:39

my kids love broccoli! But love all veggies. Mine don't like chips much (oven chips) but love hm wedges and 'circle chips'

I love going out with friends when they scoff all their veggies I feel so proud!

When creche - school give out 'sweets' on birthdays my kids have always brought them home and saved them to after tea!! When others go mad to get in them hehe

Skribble · 19/01/2007 22:39

My DS age 10 hates chips and potatoes but loves lightly steamed broccoli and raw carrots.
