err in an egg poacher?

or do you want to to it the poncey way in a pan of rolling boiling water?

Bring about 2" of water to boil - then slow it down so there's barely a trace of bubbling. Break egg into cup, slide into water, leave for 3 mins, lift out with flat slotted spoon, drain briefly on kitchen paper, enjoy!

i dont know, am fed up of fried eggs or scrambled.

i do it in a cup in the microwave, but it's pretty crap.....

foxtrot · 15/01/2007 11:02

We call them angel eggs or ghost eggs here because the shape of the white can be a bit strange {. Must try crumbs method.

Lucycat · 15/01/2007 11:03

We have poached eggs a lot!!

The dd's love them and it's a really easy tea.

But I do use an egg poacher

MrsBadger · 15/01/2007 11:03

get a deep frying pan or a saucepan

put an inch or two of water in it

bring it to a gentle simmer

crack an egg into it

keep simmering for 3min

hoick out with slotted spoon

drain on kitchn roll

splat onto hot buttered toast

caffeinequeen · 15/01/2007 11:03

Hi wurly i had this problem. See here

wurlywurly · 15/01/2007 11:07

ok i did attempt them a couple of weeks ago and they came out ok, DS2 ate it, but didnt know if there was a specific way of doing them. chefs tell you to put vinegar in the water and wasnt sure if this would be ok for ds2.

Best results come from the freshest eggs, they stay plumper and the white doesn't spread about. Not sure what vinegar's supposed to do - maybe solidifies a less fresh white? - but would stick to fresh egg and tried and tested Delia method (as per my post, also MrsB's)

kitbit · 15/01/2007 15:34

I can do them one at a time but any more than that and they come out like a snowstorm! But for the famous kitbit "2 pan (why don't you use the whole kitchen while you're at it?) method":

small pan of boiling water about 5 inches deep
when bubbling turn down to a simmer and stir rapidly with wooden spoon to get whirlpool
break egg into the eye of the whirlpool and hey presto the whirlpool wraps the egg white neatly around the yolk into a cool looking ball of poached loveliness.
That's where the problem is with 2 in one pan - I'm sure it can be done, but when I try it I get one ball of yummy gorgeousness and a mess that looks like a bad sneeze around the outside. So for 2 eggs I use 2 pans

fortyplus · 15/01/2007 15:36

Only on Mumsnet...

kitbit · 15/01/2007 15:36

oh and yes, vinegar stops the white from spreading about too much. I put vinegar in the water when boiling eggs as if they split the white doesn't then drift out, but putting vinegar into poaching water...umm, don´t fancy it

kitbit · 15/01/2007 20:34

oh DON'T tell me I can even kill an egg thread!????

sob

wurlywurly · 15/01/2007 20:50

no i will stick to plain water and give that a go.

Thanks everyone.

I nearly spit chocolate all over the screen reading that!

AllyH · 16/01/2007 15:31

Never done it myself, but watch my Aunt and she breaks an egg into clingfilm and twirls it round at the top and then she drops it into boiling water to cook. So long as the clingfilm stays put, perfect poached eggs every time!

wurlywurly · 17/01/2007 09:57

oh allyh might have to give that a go sounds like a clever idea.

OP posts:
kitbit · 18/01/2007 13:54

right - just tried the egg in clingfilm thing... when I dropped the clingfilm balls into the pan they started to stick to it AARGH! so I fished them out...2 minutes, a chopstick and 2 clothespegs later, and voilà! Perfect. I lightly sprayed the film with oil first, and sprinkled some herbs on it which went all through the white too, yummmm.
Thanks AllyH!
