Carrots are nice mashed with a bit of french mustard and brown sugar

Sprouts are best with crispy bacon......sorry

Cut a cross in the root end of each sprout (only 1-2mm) before you lightly boil them

Lightly boiling them is FINE, that's what most people do. Don't worry!

If you want to be flash, you can roast some of the carrots (once lightly boiled) with butter/a bit of thyme, but there's no need....

It will be OK, honest, now BREATHE....

Sorry, I was talking to myself for a moment there

I have a lovely carrot recipe, if butter is okay? Veggie without cheese seems a bit harsh.

evamum · 24/12/2006 20:08

For gorge carrots put in a pan with about 4 big spoons of sugar and splash water to cover bottom by about a cm, then add a big wodge butter (prob half a pack) and leave covered on very very low heat for about an hour and a half, can also be done in the oven in a casserole type dish with lid, takes awhile but gives almost caramelised melty carrots and a lovely buttery sauce.

For sprouts very lightly boil then drain water and ut back in pan with a glass of orange juice and some bashed up chestnuts and turn heat up high to glaze/fry them

Hope thats clear, have started on christmas cheer!!

Meant to add I love carrots like this cos it is not very easy to bugger them up and is no effort on my part....

MABS · 24/12/2006 20:20

Evamum, the carrots sound fab but have no more oven space. Could they be done like that in a large frying pan with lin for 2 hrs? thanks

DON'T put a cross in the sprouts, they don't need it (so that's a job saved ); boil water, salt it lightly and then lob them in and simmer for c 5mins.

We have garlicky buttered carrots - slice and cook as normal (c 10 mins) and meanwhile smash some garlic, melt lots of butter, add the garlic to it and heat for a short time; then when the carrots are done pour in the garlicky butter and stir around before serving. Lovely.

MABS · 24/12/2006 20:20

that should say - with lid!!

my stepdad taught me to put a cross in the sprouts, but frankly I probably won't bother either, now you've said I needn't!!

SherlockLGJ · 24/12/2006 20:24

Do carrots as per normal. Dry roast some sesame seeds, add teaspoon of honey to carrots and sprinkle with sesame seeds just before serving.

Sprouts.

Dry roast pine nuts, and add to sprouts just before serving.

My mum taught me to as well, Greeny

OTOH she also used to boil them - with bicarb - for about 25 mins (double )

I stopped doing the cross ages ago but saw MrGR on telly this week reinforcing the message!

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 24/12/2006 20:26

LGJ Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 24/12/2006 20:28

Ah, well if the delectable Gordon doesn't do it, that's good enough for me!

I am one of these odd people who actually likes sprouts ...and come to think of it, my stepdad's were always pretty mushy

SherlockLGJ · 24/12/2006 20:32

LGJ waves to Greeny. ///\

MABS · 24/12/2006 21:00
