When is butter nut squash ripe

I was given a butter nut squash a couple of mionths ago and was told it wasn't ripe. She told me to leave it on window sill til ripe, but how will I know?

Maybe they sound different if you knock them?
(However as you only have one, that's not much help.)

I grow bn squash - when they're not ripe they're green. When they're rip tehy're yellow. Always works for me!

No green, should sound hollow when you knock it and it will have a less shiny, more matt look.

Yep, I just peel the outer skin and scoop out the seeds, chop into pieces and steam. it's lovely combined with parsnip or sweet potato. It's my DD's favourite (7mths).
