Is it pale beer like lager or more like heavy? dark beer?

Personally I would use a 'real ale' type of bottled beer.
I hate lager cos it's chemically and fizzy!!
I've never made a beer batter, these are personal preferences only

i used to be a rest manager and the chefs always used bitter, mild or guinness for batter and cider for sauces
