DD 20 months swallowing pasta whole....

Her favourite food is pasta shells with spinach and ricotta sauce - she gobbles it down so fast that she doesn't chew the shells at all. They are not the really small ones. Is this ok? I tell her to chew but she just grins at me and swallows it like soup.

ds2 did that from when he was first able to get it into his mouth by himself..never had a problem he was just too lazy to chew....still is, always said his teeth would out last him cause he never uses them..

Ds is 20mths too and he does exactly the same thing. He eats as if his plate is about to be snatched away from him. He does the same as your dd with the large ribbed tube shaped pasta - is that rigatoni? Doesn't seem to bother him though - he coughs if anything gets stuck. I guess pasta's slimy enough to slide down. Bizarre boy...

gutsy ds does this too...

Piffleoffagus · 18/05/2004 19:59

we have similar issue witb spirals, down in one... never seen a whole one come out again so she must process it somehow....
I guess its ok? I never worried about it before.... eeeekss!!!

dd2 manages with her single half-exposed tooth, maybe she's swallowing whole too

strangerthanfiction · 18/05/2004 21:00

Sprials, shells, tubes, you name it, if it's pasta, dd (19 months) swallows it. So long as it's got enough sauce I guess it just slides down.

prufrock · 19/05/2004 13:54

Another dd doing this. She has also worked out how to suck up spaghetti, so we get lots of sauce spattered tops. In fact, she's always swallowed pasta whole - back when she was very small we would give her those mini alphabet pasta, and when she threw up you could read her vomit!

Oh good glad it's not just mine! Makes me gag when she does it, I will just have to not look at her when she is eating pasta!

another one here CD - DS is 2.6 and has always been like this, sometimes he actually looks uncomfortable swallowing down huge lumps of food and I'll say "it is ok to chew you know".

Nutcracker · 19/05/2004 13:58

My Ds does this too, always has done. Think thats why he likes pasta so much, no need for any effort.
