what about mushrooms on toast? brown in a little butter/oil (with onions if you like),then finish off with a dash of cream and lemon juice, loads of black pepper and freshly chopped tarragon or thyme if you have it. also add garlic at the beginning if you like it. pile it onto hot buttered toast (white my pref)
yum

try this one:

Serves 4 Cold Vegetable Vegetarian Main Course England British Gluten Wheat free Eggless

Ingredients
6tbsp Olive Oil
3tbsp Red Wine Vinegar
450g/1lb Button Mushrooms, cleaned
175g/6oz Double Gloucester Cheese, cubed
50g/2oz Pine Nuts, toasted
2 Dessert Apples, cored and sliced
Mixed Baby Salad Leaves (about 225g/8oz)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil and vinegar.

  2. Place the cleaned mushrooms in a large bowl and pour the oil mixture over the top. Mix well, cover and leave to marinate for 2 hours.

  3. After the marinating time, add the remaining ingredients to the mushrooms and toss lightly to coat well. Serve immediately.

I think what you said - but replace puree with ketchup, for sugary bar-b-q hit, and maybe even add a dash of honey, or keep that for whatever else you're barbying. a bit of soy might work, have you got the sweetish indonesian one that waitrose do? (katchup manis? sp)

Anyone got the Vegetarian Epicure to hand? It has a recipe that sounds v like the CodMothers...but the mushrooms and ingredients are cooked...makes it richer and more barbecuey. From what I remember: Fry onions and mushrooms, add garlic, onions, soy, wine vinegar, honey or dark brown sugar, ginger, oooh, I remember now, RED WINE, simmer for a v short time, chill and serve with fresh parsley on top.
