When you cook mussles I know that you discard the ones that are closed but what about the ones that are slightly open ie 1/4 open, can you eat those? or should they be thrown out?

If it was a problem you would have been sick by now kbaby - I reckon dodgy shell fish ususually shows its effects within 6 hours.

If they are partly open then you should tap them (fairly hard) - if they close fully within 20-30 seconds then they are fine, but discard the ones that don't shut before cooking.

And similarly if any odn't open during cooking, then likewise these shoudl not be eaten.
