I am not a very imaginative cook, but I really want to show off this year. So I thought maybe if the foodies (and non foodies!) could post their Christms day dinner plans, we could all glean the bits that appeal to us, then we could all show off a bit.

I will be more of a gleaner than a gleanee, but I am sure there are some wonderful mumsnetters who have lovely ideas.... that I can pinch.

Please feel free to add any foolproof recipes for lamb gravy - purely for the use of others, you understand

I will be serving

Roast lamb
Roast turkey
Pigs in blankets
Broccili
Peas
Carrots
Sprouts
Roast parsnips
Roast potatoes

Feel free to contribute aany ideas!

Blimey firefly I am very impressed!!

I like the idea of sweet potatoe mash, never had it but used to do it for ds and it tasted lovely.

Don't put a cross in my spuds but I do give them a good shake when I drain them to roughen the edges and help get them crispy.

Sorry that made no sense - haven;t had it as part of main meal but have tasted it!!!

colditz · 26/11/2006 23:14

Ah don't be impressed, we're just a bunch of old fashioned farmers who think shop bought spuds are "far too dear"
I made wedges out of sweet potato one time, I didn't like them, but everyone has different tastes.

my dad told me that you do a X in the bottom of the sprouts to help the stalk bit cook quicker - ohterwise you have a hard middle or soggy sprouts. don't know if it is true =, but as my dad told me I don't argue.

Colditz - if you want to make it more special I would concerntrate on a few jazzy extras - like homemade cranberry accompanimnet - kind of condiments that you can make in advance but ad to the whole affair. I cn;t remember if you said you were doing lamb but if you are do your own mint sauce - chopped fresh mint (from supermarket/garden) bit of vinegar and bit of sugar. The home chopped effect of the mint is lovely.

Also if possible get some goose fat to do your potatoes in - it really makes a difference.

Dimpledthighs, I heard Gordon Ramsay (bleurgh! bleurgh!) rant (surely not?) recently about what a load of nonsense it all was to cut crosses in sprouts. Food sin.

But I didn't bother listening or trying to find out what his explanation was (can only listen to him for 10 second bouts).

ANyone know why it is apparently a scoffable offence?

DimpledThighs · 27/11/2006 19:28

ramsay shamasy - I know who I am listening to, my dad could beat him in a fight and he swears more than him

Ramasy is a media whore - anything for a bit of contraversy (if you can call not X's your sprouts contraversial!!!)

DimpledThighs · 27/11/2006 19:29

opps! Hope that doesn't come across as all aggresive - it was meant to be funny!

pointydog · 27/11/2006 20:04

Sprout controversy! Bring it on!

You slagging my sprouts?

Toady · 27/11/2006 20:18

You have to put a X in your sprouts
