Re Packet sauces (Colmans, Schwartz etc).

A welcome store cupboard necessity?

Or the Work of the Devil???

OP posts:
Tutter · 22/11/2006 18:26

wouldn't use for ds

but always used to use them for chilis (chillis?)- made the sauce richer and thicker ime

iota · 22/11/2006 18:28

depends what's in them - a lot seem to contain hydrogentated vegtable oil

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:33

coleman's chicken chasseur is a staple in our house.
I know I can make my own, but sometimes, I just can't be arsed.

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:34

tutter- put cocoa powder in chilli sauce to make it thicker - trust me, tis lush.
(and authentically Mexican)

Sheraz · 22/11/2006 18:36

Don't get all the foodies started,, remeber the chicken vaginas last night?! If it was poison they wouldn't sell it in the shop. I use packets, jars, and make my own. do what suits you. I would be wary about giving to small kids, cos of salt content though.

ComeOVeneer · 22/11/2006 18:37

I don't have anything against them, however I don't use them. Ienjoy cooking from scratch (actually find it quite therapeutic).

Mercy · 22/11/2006 18:44

I don't think I've used one for years but am considering using the one Enid recommends - because how ever hard I try my attempts at making cheese sauce are always disastrous.

I used to use a stroganoff one iirc.

I also make cottage pie with half an Oxo cube and always make gravy with Bisto granules.

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:45

Which one is that Mercy?

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:45

I always use cornflour to make cheese sauce.

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:46

In fact I recall there was a thread on the ultimate cheese sauce.

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 18:46

I always use them, found 9 in my cupboard today.

Generally i think I have more important stuff to stress about so won't lose sleep over it.

AitchTwoOh · 22/11/2006 18:48

i think they taste funny. as long as you are tight-fisted enough to freeze wine dregs (oooohooo, and i am, let me tell you) then you can always make your own sauces taste delish. although i confess that dh is in charge of cheese sauce in our house, i don't have the patience for them.

TheHighwayCod · 22/11/2006 18:48

i NEVER use them or jarred ones either
i am, of course, Closer To GOd

iota · 22/11/2006 18:49

those Seeds of Change organic jars of sauce are quite good, Cod - even WWW uses them

WideWebWitch · 22/11/2006 18:49

Agree, it depends on what's in them.

TheHighwayCod · 22/11/2006 18:49

no no
they all tastes tinny

WideWebWitch · 22/11/2006 18:50

I do indeed Iota!

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:50

white wine in cheese sauce is a good thing.
But not red - it goes pink (doesn't it DH?)

Coleman's Chasseur is my only sin, if I repent can I get close to God too?

ilovecaboose · 22/11/2006 18:50

I use oxo cubes as often run out of homemade stock.

Don't use packet sauces cos like COV I find cooking from scratch theraputic.

I think they can be quite high in salt, but that is worse I have heard about them.

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 18:51

Jamie Oliver tomato sauce jars are nice - no starch or hydrog stuff in.

Tinker · 22/11/2006 18:51

I do use the IKEA gravy one - can't make that yourself, surely.

And do use seeds of change (organic, natch)/loyd grossman jars when cannot be arsed/short of time (Brownie night, for instance)

TheHighwayCod · 22/11/2006 18:51

so my objecction to them is nto that pepoel must not use them
