The MN food guilt phenomenon

Tonight I am serving my children

Bird's Eye chicken dippers
Bird's Eye fish fingers
McCain Oven chips
Broccoli
Heinz Baked Beanz

I feel that my mind has been twisted so much that I actually feel bad at producing such a "poor" dinner. But that's silly, isn't it? I mean it's 100 % chicken breast (plus batter, 100 % cod (plus batter), potatoes and sunflower oil...

OK, OK, maybe I exaggerated but it is less than 3 minutes 30 seconds though, because that's how long I time eggs for the children in the morning and in that time I can DEF make a sandwich for my lunch and add fruit AND sling it in a bag and sometimes make myself another coffee (organic, fairtrade, natch ) too, all before the timer pings! I have been know to unload dishwasher too on a day when the cleaner's not coming, oh the fun I have playing my little games in the grey light of early morning!

Sheraz · 21/11/2006 20:32

friutshoot anyone?

WideWebWitch · 21/11/2006 20:32

DizzyBint · 21/11/2006 20:36

10 minutes to put a chicken in the oven. Think it took me bearly 1 minute on Sunday - am I doing something wrong?

wannaBe1974 · 21/11/2006 20:49

way to go jj's ds1.
You can come and visit me any time and I'll get in the McDonalds.

Expat, I am totally with you, spaghetti hoops on toast are beyond minging.

Bozza · 21/11/2006 20:51

Pitchounette if you are working at home you are at a major advantage to someone like me who arrives home with two children to be fed at 5.50. It takes 5 mins (call it a coffee break) to put the wedges on and then back to your desk. They really don't need watching.

DH occasionally works at home and it makes my life loads easier if I can call on him to do wedges or potatoes.

Mercy · 21/11/2006 20:52

I give up, who cares anyway.

Oi, I'm not superwoman, I'm a ponce I think you'll find. Shall I post my holiday shopping list to prove it? ha ha.
Bozza, yes, you are clearly doing something wrong if it only took you a minute to put a chicken in the oven, were you not cutting lemons to put inside it and lovingly smothering its breasts with fresh herbs from your outside pots mixed with organic butter? G

Pitchounette, I work ft oth, as does my dh. I still don't buy the quick has to equal processed argument, I really don't. and I don't tihnk there's anything wrong with frozen veg, not at all!

I can't stand semolina but I do eat lentils, albeit those you don't need to soak, so puy ones or red lentils sometimes.

lol vvv, Emkana's in Germany isn't she? Bit far!

Gillian76 · 21/11/2006 20:55

It's all about attitudes and habits. the marketing companies would love us to believe that it is all quick, hassle free, bung-in-the-oven cooking.

If you're in the habit of cooking from scratch with good quality ingredients it's just as quick.

It's getting yourself into the habit and ignoring the marketing that's hard.

But worthwhile, imo.

Flossam · 21/11/2006 20:56

Actually VVV she is German but not in Germany. I think she is actually somewhere around your old neck of the woods somewhere abouts. You'll just have to move back!

expatinscotland · 21/11/2006 20:57

Thanks, Pruni! I've saved that as one of my favourites!

niceglasses · 21/11/2006 20:58

My problem isn't with the food. Of course you should feed your children to the best of your ability - its your duty. Its the best of your ability bit that is the key for me here.

We are the privileged ones. Just take a look at the 'What did you study at Uni' thread. I don't like the idea of making assumptions/being smug/slaggy whatever you want to call it about what other pple feed their kids (not having a go, just in general) because we don't know the half of it tbh. Its back to education, opportunites, background etc. Its an issue that touches so many other issues - its not about fresh food=good, ready meals etc=bad. Its about the way society is - for me anyhow.

WideWebWitch · 21/11/2006 20:59

Ah, ok Floss! Agree Gillian76, absolutely. Btw, I do do all that stuff with my chicken sometimes, or dh does. Which, in Custy's book, makes me a middle class ponce (for having growing herbs)

expatinscotland · 21/11/2006 21:01

My DH does manual labour for a living. Always has.

He grows herbs.

He does a great roast chicken, too.

Usually we just mix some 'Good w/Everything' from Lakeland w/olive oil and the juice of two lemons, annoint the chicken, and that's it in the oven.

Mercy · 21/11/2006 21:03

Pruni, I would like you to start that thread. My family's eating habits have changed - but only very slightly.

The main change is that I am thinking of buying a bread maker. Dh thinks it's a waste of money. But it ain't his money.

Quadrophenia · 21/11/2006 21:05

my dp is a manual worker and grows herbs

WideWebWitch · 21/11/2006 21:06

Mercy, I got a bread maker for my birthday, it's amazing.

wheresthehamster · 21/11/2006 21:06

Haven't read all the posts but did anyone query £1.50 for a tin of spaghetti hoops?
