what is all purpose flour??

does anyone know? I'm finding lots of fab sounding US recipes but they ask for all purpose flour. Is this plain or SR?

Americans don't tend to go in for SR.

Thanks NQC! I made the muffins with SR and omitted the baking powder. Worked fine!
