Is the crust necessary or too good to be omitted?

nah too much faff!

I've never done it, we always eat it too quickly anyway!

Gillian76 · 10/11/2006 10:38

Was thinking it sounded like too much faff

FatThighs · 10/11/2006 19:42

here

we've done this recipe a few times, well dh did.he said he didn't bother with the crust bit,he says it's just for looks. The ham is fantastic though. It does kinda stink when it's cooking though.

lucy5 · 10/11/2006 19:55

I think the crust is a must, although i do it differently. I use syrup, brown sugar and wholegrain mustard. Doesn't take long to do.

PrincessPeaHead · 10/11/2006 19:57

I never do the crust.

I do the coke recipe but I must say I'm not entirely convinced that it is so much better than just doing it the normal way.
I know I'm in the minority with that, most people think it is fabulous (maybe it would be more fabulous if I did the crust, hmmmmm )

pindy · 10/11/2006 19:59

Does anyone have the recipe I could have please? Have had the ham done that way and it was fab.

Thanks x

PrincessPeaHead · 10/11/2006 20:01

take ham.
bring to the boil once in water, discard water
bung back in pan, add a 2 litre bottle of coke and a couple of quartered onions, bring to the boil and chuck in a medium oven for an hour or so.
viola

well that's what I do anyway

pindy · 10/11/2006 20:04

Thanks will try that. Roughly what sort of size should the ham be?

Gillian76 · 10/11/2006 20:09

Dh nearly drank the Coke I bought in Tesco today

He was a bit perpelexed when I told him what it was for!

it doesn't really matter - just have a look at them and see what you need depending on how many people you have to feed.
A 2l bottle of coke will cover quite a big one. If there are only eg 4 of you and you go for a smaller size you may only use a litre and a half or whatever. Coke needs to completely cover the ham (well it could stick out an inch or so without mishap)

obv cover the pot when it is in the oven (forgot to mention that)

good luck!

She says 2 litres for a 2kg piece of gammon.

Mine is 1.5kg and looks plenty big enough for 5 of us and some leftovers for sandwiches.

Just bung it all on. Or a bit less if the coke is getting too high up the pan.
It really doesn't matter at all, as long as it is poaching in it.
