7 Month lumpy food? How long till they get to grips with it?

Hi.

Ive been gradually making ds's food lumpier and having no problems with him eating it. He seems to have grasped the chewing motion quite well, however this was my homemade food so not as lumpy as jars.

As hes allergic to quite alot im restricted in what i can cook for him so i use jars too and add my own veg. I have moved up to 7 month jars and he always sicks them up. He starts gagging about halfway through and then it all comes back.

Is he just getting used to the lumps? Even though they seem seem smaller than my lumps in my homemade food

Charlie, we're finding dd doesn't like the 7 month jar textures either - I think with her it is the combination of the softer, rather thick texture, and the squishy little lumps. She will happily gum down fruit slices, cheese sandwiches, etc...but retch over Hipp Organic.
It must be such a chore watching what you give him, but I wonder if he would do better with as much home-made as you can manage. I personally think all the 7 month foods I've sneaked a taste of feel horrible in the mouth (compared to the 4 month and toddler versions)...not much help I guess. Obviously dd at 8.5 months is much better with lumpy food than she was, so hopefully your ds will get used to it.

Just done mashed up banana with pureed pear and apple and he puked it up afetr two mouthfulls bringing back his fully pured lunch.

It was the lumpy banana i think. Surely this cant be righ, he is over 7 months now but cant kep any lumpy food down

My DD2 (1 yesterday) only got used to 7 month jars in the last couple of months. She is a very sicky baby, makes herself sick if she cries a lot and still gags a lot. Dd1 never had this problem. DD2 has also only just got one tooth coming through so presumably can't really chew the lumps. Some people just don't like lumpy sloppy food (eg gravy, custard...) so you could try dry finger food as well.

I had this with DS, so frustrating, you could maybe get through a whole meal then have one tinest lump and it all comes back. I think DS stopped doing this at around 13-14 months. (Not really what you want to hear, is it?) It's just the way it is.

Think i will carry on pureeing his food then and maybe just thicken it with more potato.

Have tried what little finger foods he can have but he brings them back too. Really thought hed be able to keep the banana down
