Can anyone help me make a celebratory cake please?

A family member has asked me to make a cake for a retirement party.
There will be quite a few people there, 50+ I think. I don't necessarily need to make a cake big enough for that many but it needs to be fairly large.
Can anyone help me with a recipe please?
Do I do plain sponge or fruit? How should I decorate it?

If you want a fruit one, there is an easy peasy recipe for one in the christmas cake thread, you just need to double the bits and use a bigger tin.
