Potato cakes, of a sort - help!

I want to make potato cakes, without egg.

Oh, and without potatoes maybe.

I've got a bunch of root veg, and am debating peeling, cutting, boiling, mashing, making patties, and frying. I am planning on adding a bit of flour, maybe some milk. Maybe cheese? I can't use egg.

Will this work?

I have sweet potatoes, a bit of beetroot, lots of parsnip, and some carrots. I might go buy some normal potatoes, as I don't think there's enough ...

Bump? I've found a recipe involving grating them and frying them, but I think boiling, mashing and frying will give a better result ... I guess I can use flour to "dry up" the resulting mash, so it will make balls ...

they might fry most successfully if you chill them first and fry in very hot fat, you could grate a bit of carrot for textrure

It's for toddlers (mostly), so I probably don't want texture.

Thanks for tip: re chilling. I guess I'd better get cutting and peeling and boiling now!

Arse. I did some of it up for tea for us, and it wasn't that cold, but it was very sticky. I used a non-stick pan, and hot oil, and the goop stuck to the bottom. It tasted ok, but was very messy and unattractive. And as I'm planning on reheating them tomorrow, this doesn't seem like a good plan.

I could try to fry them at the co-op tomorrow, but I think we just have a tiny burner somewhere, so that's a non-starter. I'll have to try frying it, and if it doesn't work, serve ratatouille and quinoa. Or something.

I think I've got them working. Did smaller ones, more oil, nonstick pan, and they seemed to work fine. (I thought I didn't need nonstick if I was frying in oil)

I'll see how the kids like them tomorrow, but despite not being shaped (I just dumped them in out of the spoon) they came out looking ok.

I have to microwave them tomorrow to warm them, but that's a whole other gross story.
