What to serve with sausage casserole

MEgirl · 19/01/2015 12:18

I've never made one before so thought I'd give it a try today. I've looked at several recipes with/without beans/potatoes etc. I'm thinking of trying one with beans but don't know what goes well alongside.

Ideas?

Baked potatoes. Or mashed.

I made sausage casserole ages ago and had it with rice. But I think it was a bit weird.

I nearly always serve mine with rice. I make mine with baked beans and sometimes kidney beans as well to stretch it out.

I make sausage casserole quite regularly, I serve it with mashed or new potatoes (mashed is probably the nicest, and more traditional with sausages) and green beans.

Thanks. Might go with mash for DH & DSs. DD doesn't like it so will have to give her something else. Not expecting the beans to go down too well. But at least they'll try most things at least once.

We have sausage caserole those 'bake your own rolls' you can buy, perfect for dipping - yummy

HowardTJMoon · 19/01/2015 12:33

I normally just serve it with dumplings to be honest but then I do put loads of veg in.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 19/01/2015 12:50

I serve it with brown rice. The recipe I use involves cooked sausages cut into pieces casseroled with peppers, carrots & onions in a tomato based sauce. Some cannellini beans stirred in towards the end so that they don't break up too much. Fussy eaters can be told that it's 'posh baked beans' :)

Sausage casserole has to have part baked bread of garlic bread with it in this house. Otherwise everybody sulks.

TheGonnagle · 19/01/2015 15:18

Or garlic bread, not of garlic bread (must remember to proof read)

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/01/2015 15:19

Crusty bread if it has beans, mash if it doesn't

Gatekeeper · 19/01/2015 15:22

mashed potatoes and steamed dark green cabbage with a sprinkling of nutmeg on the top..yum!

middlings · 19/01/2015 15:23

Bread! I serve with a multi seed bread I make in my breadmaker awaits thrashing for the evilness of breadmakers.

PrincessOfChina · 19/01/2015 15:26

I whack lots of beans in and would just serve with greens - maybe green beans, broccoli. No wonder my DH is always hungry though looking at what you guys serve.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/01/2015 15:32

We have it with either with crusty bread, or with hassleback potatoes. I put either butter beans or green lentils in the casserole.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/01/2015 15:33

Oh and green vege, either savoy, sprouts or kale.

RumAppleGinger · 19/01/2015 20:02

Yorkshire puddings, perfect for dunking. I put loads of veg in the casserole, peppers, carrots, onions, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, pretty much anything that's in the fridge and needs used up.

piggychops · 19/01/2015 20:03

Cheesy mash and cabbage

MuttonCadet · 19/01/2015 20:04

Mashed potatoes in this house

Clueing4looks · 19/01/2015 20:08

Oooooh it's served with bubble and squeak in my kitchen!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/01/2015 16:45

Bubble and squeak = genius!

TSSDNCOP · 20/01/2015 16:50

Jacket potato and red cabbage

Allalonenow · 20/01/2015 17:01

I cook it with a couple of layers of sliced potato on the top, so it's all done in one dish.

SingRingPing · 20/01/2015 17:32

Sweet potato mash or normal mash. Jacket potato if I'm feeling lazy. Broccoli, but we have broccoli with almost everything! I alway have a slice of bread too for the last dribbles!

MrsDumbledore · 20/01/2015 17:53

Usually mash and broccoli here. We make the casserole with baked beans and carrots in it.
