Recipes to make my children eat oily fish

newrecruit · 04/01/2015 09:33

I've decided they need more fish in their diets. I love fish but DH doesn't so we rarely eat it.

DC are 8&5.

How can I get it into their diet without just plonking some salmon on their plate which they refuse to eat.

Thought about capsules but would rather they had it in their diet.

You'd be surprised how successful mackerel on toast was in this household!

Purplecircle · 04/01/2015 09:36

Salmon with pasta and philli might work
Flake it and mix with cooked pasta and some melted philli

Also tuna mayo pasta

milkjetmum · 04/01/2015 09:37

Mackerel Bolognese popular here.

youbethemummylion · 04/01/2015 09:39

You can get Birdseye Salmon fish fingers in some supermarkets, or you can make them yourself just dip salmon pieces in egg then breadcrumbs then bake in the oven. My two love them.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/01/2015 09:39

My kids love salmon fish cakes - salmon, mashed potato, bit of mayo and lemon and bake in the oven.

sleepwhenidie · 04/01/2015 09:41

Mashed potato mixed with peas and flaked (baked) salmon was always an easy one with mine...

Scotslasslivinginfrance · 04/01/2015 09:41

Rice, mackerel, honey and lime. It's a winner here. Flake through cooked rice and add honey and lime with seasoning and serve with salad or add extra veg like sweet corn or peas. Can also be served cold but kids prefer it warm.

mrspremise · 04/01/2015 11:10

Mackerel kedgeree
Kippers for breakfast
Salmon wrapped in filo pastry
Sardines on toast, or just grilled with lemon and garlic
Pink fish pasta (trout flaked into spaghetti with lemon, herbs and capers)

chocomochi · 04/01/2015 12:33

Salmon/tuna fish cake or croquette (mash with potatoes and rolled in breadcrumbs before shallow frying).

Fish and egg fried rice.

Fish pasta as pp mentioned with a cheesy sauce.

sleepwhenidie · 04/01/2015 12:50

Oh I give them daily EyeQ kids (strawberry flavour I think) capsules too, As I don't think my dc's diet alone would provide enough EFA's. They love them!

Midorichan · 04/01/2015 13:49

I dry cook a load of salmon down until it becomes flakes, then use it as sprinkles for rice balls (Japanese recipe).

TyneTeas · 04/01/2015 14:10

Smoked mackerel goes down well in our house

Either pate (mix with some butter and lemon juice) or salad with cold rice and yoghurt and peppers/corn

These are all great.

Will definitely be trying some of these.

I make a very easy pasta that is basically tuna pasta but with sardines instead... fry some garlic (we like loads) in good olive oil,add tinned tomatoes and a tin of sardines (the ones in olive oil). Reduce the sauce and finish off at the end with a good squeeze of lemon, some seasoning and some chopped parsley if you have it. V cheap too which is a bonus Smile

My DC like sardines on toast, and will sometimes tolerate Asian salmon parcels with noodles or rice. There is a great smoked mackerel recipe that HFW did a few years ago in the guardian. If you google his name and mackerel it should come up.

Waitrose had a recipe card recently and my kids loved it. I didn't think they would. It was jacket potato, scoop out contents, mixed with a tin of steamed mackerel, peas, soft cheese and pesto then pop back in to the jackets. They get involved on the scooping and mixing. We have this often now.

ButterscotchClouds · 05/01/2015 20:19

This recipe is delicious. The lentils make it healthy and you can freeze the salmon balls.
It really isn't spicy despite the name. Mine loved it when they were little,

TyneTeas · 05/01/2015 20:36

In case anyone didn't know, tinned tuna doesn't count as oily fish apparently (fresh does though)

RojaGato · 06/01/2015 13:51

Sardines flaked into an italian tomato sauce. Can be done with fresh ones as the main protein or use tinned ones really broken down (enhances the flavour) then add bits of chicken or meatballs, depends how much you want to hide it/how fish resistant your children are.
Kedgeree made with fresh salmon or mackerel broken up into bits, with sweetcorn added to it, served with a mild and oniony curry sauce.

GoogleyEyes · 06/01/2015 13:54

Those tins of mackerel in tomato sauce, stirred into pasta, is one my kids like. I do it when we've not gone shopping as it's store cupboard ingredients. I add frozen peas if I have them, too.

mausmaus · 06/01/2015 13:54

makarel pate goes down well. just blend the smoked filets with a little cream.
salmon in teriyaki marinade
fishfingers Wink

I have this quite a lot.

Salmon burgers and fishcakes work as well.

Salmon Salsa Verde is a firm fave in our house, one of my dd's and dh don't really like fish, but this meal went down a treat..it's soooo tasty! Smile

Clobbered · 11/01/2015 19:52

Smoked mackerel pate - packet of smoked mackerel fillets, skin off, tub of Philadelphia cheese, pepper, parsley, squeeze of lemon, blitz - serve with crusty bread. Yum!
