Recipes to make my children eat oily fish

I've decided they need more fish in their diets. I love fish but DH doesn't so we rarely eat it.

DC are 8&5.

How can I get it into their diet without just plonking some salmon on their plate which they refuse to eat.

Thought about capsules but would rather they had it in their diet.

Mackerel paté on toast is lovely. Whizz smoked mackerel with cream cheese, lemon juice and a little bit of cayenne.

I haven't tried it on my son yet - but my favourite food in the world is a spread my mum made me when I was young that I still make today.

Take a packet of smoked mackerel - the type that is vacuum packed in the fridge bit of supermarket and 1 or two packets of cream cheese (depending on how thick you like it) and put in blender. Spread on brown toast and it is DIVINE. Especially with a side salad. I could eat it all day everyday.

Smoked mackerel pate - packet of smoked mackerel fillets, skin off, tub of Philadelphia cheese, pepper, parsley, squeeze of lemon, blitz - serve with crusty bread. Yum!

Red Salmon Thai curry

I have this quite a lot.

Salmon burgers and fishcakes work as well.

Those tins of mackerel in tomato sauce, stirred into pasta, is one my kids like. I do it when we've not gone shopping as it's store cupboard ingredients. I add frozen peas if I have them, too.

Sardines flaked into an italian tomato sauce. Can be done with fresh ones as the main protein or use tinned ones really broken down (enhances the flavour) then add bits of chicken or meatballs, depends how much you want to hide it/how fish resistant your children are.
Kedgeree made with fresh salmon or mackerel broken up into bits, with sweetcorn added to it, served with a mild and oniony curry sauce.

In case anyone didn't know, tinned tuna doesn't count as oily fish apparently (fresh does though)

This recipe is delicious. The lentils make it healthy and you can freeze the salmon balls.
It really isn't spicy despite the name. Mine loved it when they were little,

Waitrose had a recipe card recently and my kids loved it. I didn't think they would. It was jacket potato, scoop out contents, mixed with a tin of steamed mackerel, peas, soft cheese and pesto then pop back in to the jackets. They get involved on the scooping and mixing. We have this often now.

I make a very easy pasta that is basically tuna pasta but with sardines instead... fry some garlic (we like loads) in good olive oil,add tinned tomatoes and a tin of sardines (the ones in olive oil). Reduce the sauce and finish off at the end with a good squeeze of lemon, some seasoning and some chopped parsley if you have it. V cheap too which is a bonus Smile

My DC like sardines on toast, and will sometimes tolerate Asian salmon parcels with noodles or rice. There is a great smoked mackerel recipe that HFW did a few years ago in the guardian. If you google his name and mackerel it should come up.

These are all great.

Will definitely be trying some of these.

Smoked mackerel goes down well in our house

Either pate (mix with some butter and lemon juice) or salad with cold rice and yoghurt and peppers/corn

I dry cook a load of salmon down until it becomes flakes, then use it as sprinkles for rice balls (Japanese recipe).

Oh I give them daily EyeQ kids (strawberry flavour I think) capsules too, As I don't think my dc's diet alone would provide enough EFA's. They love them!

Rice, mackerel, honey and lime. It's a winner here. Flake through cooked rice and add honey and lime with seasoning and serve with salad or add extra veg like sweet corn or peas. Can also be served cold but kids prefer it warm.

Mashed potato mixed with peas and flaked (baked) salmon was always an easy one with mine...

My kids love salmon fish cakes - salmon, mashed potato, bit of mayo and lemon and bake in the oven.
