What do you think of my fab idea for Halloween party food?

You know those little mini pumpkins that sit in your hand? I am planning to bake some in the oven, scoop out the flesh, make into pumpkin ice cream and serve it in the pumpkin shells as a bowl. What do you reckon? Has anyone made pumpkin ice cream before, or have a good recipe for it?

That is a great idea, no recipe for it but I wpould just puree the cooked pulp with sugar and cinamon and then add it to a vanilla custard base.

I've just spent all afternoon making scary black cupcakes with eyeballs and orange cupcakes with spiders webs and spiders they look ace! Very spooky, the eyeball ones in particular very grim.
Also done puff pastry cheesy feet and cheesy bats and pumpkins with orange cheddar.
(doing halloween themed party tomorrow)

Not sure about pumpkin icecream though.

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2006 17:18

But it won't taste of pumpkin...

have you ever had onion ice cream, or brown bread ice cream?

had brown bread and that was nice true.....

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 14/10/2006 17:24

Don't mind them Franny. I've had pumpkin pie and it is delicious and I have no trouble imagining that pumpkin ice cream will taste lovely.

Don't like pumpkin pie though! Pumpkin soup or curry yes but pie yuk!

This recipe very similar to what you suggest Carmenere

yum. will be gorgeous. baked pumpkin is such a smooth rich texture and mixed with a custard to make ice cream i think it would be gorgeous.

i did pumpkin mash the other day and wrapped the pieces of pumpkin in foil with salt and pepper, you could do the same with cinnamon and sugar.

ShowOfBloodyAndSeveredHands · 14/10/2006 17:28

I went to a Halloween party last year and all the sandwiches were witch shaped ie sandwitches.

I thought it was bloomin' hilarious.

I was the only one.

PS no idea about pumpkin icecream but it sounds nice to me and I would just do it as Carmenere suggested.

jampots · 14/10/2006 17:28

Oh i love hallooween - fingers crossed my children want a party !

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 14/10/2006 17:28

And I would use some maple syrup too actually, that would really add to it.

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2006 17:29

Do you think so Cod? I think whoever made the one you had must not have been very good at it

I do despise pumpkin generally but thought this would be a good way to serve it - I mean anything mixed up with a load of cream and sugar is going to taste ok. The flesh of the mini pumpkins is quite sweet as well I think, more like a butternut squash.

Yep that recipe is good. Mind you if it is just for kids I would be tempted to buy the fresh custard from M&S or Waitrose and just substitute it.

OR I could fill the mini pumpkins with something like rice and vegetables, but that is a bit more ordinary don't you think?

If you were doing the ice cream, would you freeze the pumpkin shells as well, after you had filled them with ice cream, or just scoop ice cream into them at the last minute? I am thinking the former, as it will make them more solid. However they will be too cold to hold, perhaps? Hmm....

Doesn't the pumpking shell go a bit stinky and discoloured after a while though?

Nice idea though.

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 14/10/2006 17:34

Yes I would freeze the ice cream in the shells (after it has been churned) and thenbe sure to take them out about 20 minutes before you serve them.

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2006 17:34

I think you have a good idea with the orange sorbet, cod, but we have a minor reputation for home made ice cream in this house to uphold

Carmen it is going to be for kids and adults too. I think it will look great and people will forget that I served a load of boring stuff for the main course.

Oh god the main course...
