What do you think of my fab idea for Halloween party food?

You know those little mini pumpkins that sit in your hand? I am planning to bake some in the oven, scoop out the flesh, make into pumpkin ice cream and serve it in the pumpkin shells as a bowl. What do you reckon? Has anyone made pumpkin ice cream before, or have a good recipe for it?

Or scrap the pumpkin idea completeley and do it with oranges! You could scoop out the flesh for sorbet, cut a scary face in them , put the sorbet in and freeze. I know oranges stuff and freeze well with sorbet, still the right colour and cheaper than pumpkins.

oh what a fine idea

cranks woman does something similar, only its a soup

but have not seen these mini pumpkins of which you speak.

hmmm

am toying with idea of hosting a halloween party for 3 yos and 1 yos and am going to nick your idea, ta.

I think I would put the shells in the fridge while the ice cream was freezing, YF. I think that would be ok.

have seen the orange sorbet things somewhere though

no pumpkin ice cream is a fab idea! Who cares what it tastes like!

I have no ice cream maker, will this be a problem?

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2006 17:36

They used to do a frozen lemon sorbet in an actual lemon at Pizza Hut, IIRC

as students we thought it was the height of sophistication

Filly my friend grows them on his allotment, he has tons

Well then best to make it from scratch. Roast something for mains, best all roud easy thing to do.

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2006 17:37

It is for adults too, it is a joint adults / children party

Sorry filly, he has been at it for years though

Cod I find my cooking is v mediocre, so something flashy like this is needed so they can go home and believe I have made an effort. We have been to some really nice meals at the other families concerned's houses so I don't want to just give them a cheese sandwich IYKWIM

it was lovely cod.

it would have been a lot lovelier if i wasn't on a diet and could ahve put the 55 packs of butter that nigella recommends in to roast with them

Heathcliffscathy · 14/10/2006 17:44

the great thing about pumpkin imo is that you can handblend it (unlike potato) so you can get a totally smooth puree.

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 14/10/2006 17:45

A big pot of chilli with rice and sour cream and nachos to start with, it's getting a bit too cold to serve cold food iyswim.

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2006 18:00

I just roasted a small one and toasted the seeds

it looked so cute, I may post a picture

If you want to be the uber mummy, you need the Martha Stewart Halloween party planner .

CountessDracula · 14/10/2006 18:16

pumpkins are great hollowed out and filled with something like gumbo or fish stew

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 14/10/2006 18:17

OOOhh thanks for that I have a fascination for that kind of Martha stewart uber wifey stuff

Greensleeves · 14/10/2006 18:18

I think it sounds bloody lovely

My Halloween food ideas:

Dead men's fingers (thin sausages with an almond flake on the end to look like fingernails)

Starry night bread (my mum used to do this, it involved spreading bread rolls with treacle and then scattering hundreds and thousands over it - and yes, you can get natural coloured hundreds and thousands in health food shops!)

Snotty slime soup (blended mushy peas with cream and cheese melted into it)

Eyeball pie (homemade plain quiche with halved boiled eggs upturned in it)

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 14/10/2006 18:18

It's fascinating, in a kind of Stepford wife way - but you can always just do one or two things from it, if they grab you.
