Sticky Toffee Question

I have a thing in my head to make sticky toffee pudding. Never done it before.

I'm looking up recipes which all say to use dates but do they mean fresh dates from the fruit and veg aisle or a packet of dates from the baking section or doesn't it matter?

I used a packet of dried dates when k made it a while ago. They are still nice and sticky even though they are dried. It was lovely
