This thread is potentially one of those smug-sounding ones, so look away if you're not in the mood

dd went to a friend's house for tea today.

They had
Fish fingers, chicken pieces, chips and tinned pasta shapes. Followed by a doughnut.

Absolutely no veg or fruit whatsoever. Not even beans ffs! Surely it could at least be offered? Just a teeny tiny cocktail tomato even?

DG you can't go wrong with a pizza and salad, yoghurts and fruit and little choccy bar of cake if they have eaten well. Its a treat tea but also has some goodness in there somewhere. Don't worry, invite away!

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:38

DS1 has never had a fruit shoot. He only drinks water [smug] He occasionally tastes my drink and it's usually water [smugsmug] But if it's juice, he never wants it in his cup. Because he only drinks water [ohsosmugithurts]

SherlockLGJ · 10/10/2006 20:38

DG

I always sound the parents out first, but we now have a regular little "clique" so I know what they eat, and vice versa.

But Fruit Shoots was a shot to far IMO.

DumbledoresGirl · 10/10/2006 20:38

Incidentally, since this thread is now partly about Fruit Shoots (again ) is there anyone out there who will answer a question I have asked on MN before, namely, is it specifically FS you object to, or all squashes?

Gobbledispook · 10/10/2006 20:38

Water tastes like shit out of my taps

I wouldn't give it to a dog

Gobbledispook · 10/10/2006 20:39

For me, it's anything with artificial sweetners in

DumbledoresGirl · 10/10/2006 20:39

GDG - that covers loads of things, not just beverages.

FrannyandZooey · 10/10/2006 20:39

Yes I do 'safe' foods as well

Just find this meal rather a strange combination, but than I guess we sometimes have sausage, egg, chips and beans, which is a similar protein overload and also no fresh veg in sight.

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:40

All sweetener squashes, DG. But particularly ones that are so heavily marketed as being a "healthy choice". That's what really makes me spit. The H2O ones they do now - still contain fecking sweetener shite.

Gobbledispook · 10/10/2006 20:41

Yep, it does DG. I don't really buy stuff with them in. I make most stuff from scratch and the boys' don't drink any kind of squash or anything like that.

I'd rather they had full sugar version of whatever it is anyway.

SherlockLGJ · 10/10/2006 20:41

Hunker

Sit down love, when you went to the bathroom on Saturday in Pizza Express, Suzy Wong informs me that he necked my wine in next to no time.

I did not believe her, but then he did sleep for a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry long time afterwards.

You decide..............

FrannyandZooey · 10/10/2006 20:42

I don't mind occasional real squash (just sugar added) but the sweeteners are a killer and I would make a great effort to make sure he never has them again. Two enormous and very upsetting tantrums were enough

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/10/2006 20:42

All squashes. DD has various food allergies. So simple things like cakes and biscuits are usually out for her too because of the peanut allergy.

At pre-school today 29 of the children got fairy cakes and DD got cheese crackers wrapped in a paper doily

Greensleeves · 10/10/2006 20:42

Why Franny, fancy seeing you here

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:42

I never drank squash even as a child when they had that powdered crap in the bottom of cups at parties. I'd ask in a very little voice for "just water, please" and always get weird looks. No doubt on Ye Olde Written Down In Pen And Ink With A Big Quill Mumsnet I was slated for being a weird kid

DumbledoresGirl · 10/10/2006 20:43

I have to admit I always avoid the "No added sugar" squashes as I would rather consume sugar than weird carcinogenic sweeteners, but then my family consumes very little squash at all and I have never noticed anything consumable have a detrimental affect on my children.

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:44

LGJ...there's No Way that DS2 drank your wine. Not a chance. You'd have noticed. I saw you draw a line on the glass when we went to the loo...

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:45

Are they always really badly behaved then, DG? [joke] [joke] [joke] [please] [don't] [take] [it] [personally]

SherlockLGJ · 10/10/2006 20:45

Spray

You are right I did, I had been warned about him.

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:45

He's a shocker and no mistake, LGJ. Gets it from his mother

SherlockLGJ · 10/10/2006 20:46

It is the mother I feel sorry for, always the last to know..

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/10/2006 20:48

Probably wouldnt help to have a wine splattered floor then?

iota · 10/10/2006 20:49

was it 'no added sugar' wine?

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:49

PMSL! He was licking just that very bit earlier, VVV...

hunkermunster · 10/10/2006 20:49

Of course, Iota! I wouldn't let my 8mo drink wine with sweeteners in! What sort of mother do you think I am?!
