Slow Cooker query - how much liquid to cook a chicken?

Have looked on a previous thread, and see that I can use my slow cooker to cook a chicken, with just a small amount of liquid. However in my instruction book (it's a morphy richards) it states that the meat and veg should always be covered with liquid.

I guess the steam makes a seal with the lid, so is it Ok to use less liquid?
