Toad in the hole

I made this tonight for dinner. Hmmm. The batter didn't rise so it wasn't very nice. I followed this recipe but used a KitchenAid rather than mixing by hand. Is that the problem?

Dish too big? Oil not hot enough? Oven not hot enough?

Would I be better just using my own Yorkshire pudding batter recipe? That's essentially what it is, correct?

That's the recipe that I always use but I use 3 eggs. Puffs up into a huge batter monster and it's delicious.
