How to stop gingerbread biscuits spreading

I must be doing something wrong, as whenever I try to cut out shapes/men for gingerbread biscuits they spread and end up not looking like they should.

Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe for a really stiff mix that stays put?

That's what always happens to mind to, and I'm a reasonably competent baker. I space them out on the tray and they still end up looking like giant blobs!

Try the bbc good food recipie on the website. It doesn't spread too much. You need to double up on the spices quantity though.

Does putting them in the fridge before you cook them help?

Skip the baking powder/bicarb! I don't know why gingerbread shape/house recipes have it in, surely the point is that they stay the same shape in the over, you don't want them to rise Hmm
