What is half and half? (American recipe)

Does anyone know what half and half is? I have an American recipe for icing and I'm guessing it is cream of some kind but not sure if single, whipping or double.

TIA Smile

half and half is cream and milk and vile in tea!

I'd substitute single cream for half and half, not sure if thet's exactly right but I've never had any major disasters so far.

I think it's just a bit lighter than single cream.

Says here, 10-12% fat
www.thekitchn.com/what-is-halfandhalf-ingredient-intelligence-205959

And there's more comparisons here - lists half and half as 10-18% and single cream as 18%
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cream

single cream can be used as a substitute in the uk. but it is not quite the same.
