I'm planning to make a rainbow cake for a first birthday and have brought wilton colours - belatedly I noticed that these have a warning about the E numbers in the colours. Are there any colours without these E numbers in (tartrazine etc) or is that the only way to get the bright colours?

Unfortunately not. Wilton gel colours are probably the best ones for making a rainbow cake. The liquids and Dr Oetker ones just don't work because the colours aren't deep enough.

Hm,m I thought that would be the answer; I'll have to weigh up e numbers vs bright colours...
