How many pieces of cake?

I am making a cake - it needs to supply at least 30 slices. I am making separate cakes of 8 inches square and then putting them together and putting rolled icing over the top. Do you think 2 8 inch cakes would be enough or should I go for 4? This is for a party where there are 2 puddings supplied, so the cake is an extra after the buffet. TIA

It depends on the type of cake. At 16 inches by 8 inches, that would supply 16 pieces down each side that were 4 inches long by 1 inch wide. Two sides equals 32 pieces. OK for sponge cake.........far more than you would need for a rich fruit cake.

An 8 inch sponge cake will give about 32 portions, so you should have plenty of cake to go around.

Thank you. I'll just do two, then.

A standard sponge portion is 2x1 inches so each 8" square will give you 8x4.

Sorry to hijack but didn't want to start a new thread about this..... I'm making a cake which calls for 2 round 8in sandwich tins. How many portions will this yield? only asking because it's for a 13 year old boy's birthday and they eat a LOT!

papalazaru Are they being sandwiched together? I have managed to get 10 thin slices out of 8inch round cake.
2 8" square cakes was plenty, there was a small square for each person -33 - and we ended up taking home one half as the puddings served were pretty generous!

Yes I was going to sandwich them together. 10 thin slices won't be enough! I might need to make 2x 8" square instead...... Those hungry boys! Thanks!!
