Chocolate lasanga help please!

I'm planning to make something like this:

For DPs birthday. We're UK based though so obviously I can't get hold of chocolate pudding or cool whip. Has anybody made one and could give me ideas as to what to put into it?

I was going to do a GF biscuit base, make a chocolate pudding from scratch and use that for the pudding layer and I was thinking of using whipped cream, but would whipped cream be okay being left overnight? I plan to make it on the Friday whilst he's at work, his birthday is on the Saturday, so obviously I need layers that are going to survive and stay in place overnight.

For chocolate pudding, could you do Angel Delight? Maybe made with less liquid to make it a bit stiffer.

Whipped cream isn't as stiff as cool whip so if that's ok with you, it'd be fine. There's a recipe www.somethingswanky.com/homemade-cool-whip/ for h/m cool whip substitute.

There used to be this stuff called Dream Whip in the home baking aisle - so with sugar, flour etc that was sort of the same thing but not sure if it still exists.

He hates angel delight annoyingly (I love it ) But I've made an american style chocolate pudding before so I'm going to try that again before his birthday to see if that will work :)

I remember Dream Whip, I used to have it as a kid, I'll have a nose and see if it still exists.

US 'pudding' just tastes of Angel Delight to me - how can he like one and not the other?

You can get pudding on Amazon (jello pudding), I have some in my cupboard right now, it's an integral part of the best cinnamon buns recipe ever.
You can get cool whip there too but would Dream Topping not be pretty similar?

No, I'm British, I have tried cool whip before though, I hosted a Thanksgiving dinner at my house as the American Exchange student at my college was a bit homesick. She got her Mum to send over a huge box filled with American things to make thanksgiving dinner, it was fun, but I don't really remember what the cool whip tasted like, we had it on pumpkin pie. This was before American cups were standard in UK households a well, so we were guestimating how much a cup was

The pudding recipe I made required me to cook it on the stove IIRC and it was creamier than angel delight, had a different consistency as well, more custard consistency. I let it cool and then we ate it, it was really nice. Maybe I'm thinking of entirely the wrong kind of pudding though!

That was it, Dream Topping not Dream Whip :) I haven't seen it in years, do shops still sell it?

I've just realised that I wouldn't be able to make the cool whip substitute as it uses gelatine, so Dream Topping or cream it is I think!

I would be happy using anything in layers though tbh, it's more that I want to ensure that they don't soak into each other! The consistency is what keeps it all in layers.

they do still sell it. My in-laws prefer it to cream

Haha, I loved it as a kid as Mum used it for trifle, I'd demolish the top layer of the trifle before anybody could eat it

Could you chocolate mousse as one of the layers?

Made in the proportions of 60g plain choc to an egg, when it sets it's quite firm.

I've got a chocolate pudding recipe that would work for that if you want it? 15 minutes, in a microwave, very easy. American, so should be the right type of stuff!

And don't use CoolWhip, it's vile. Stiff whipped cream would work.

Hm, I've never made mousse before, is it something that can go horribly wrong?

I found a recipe for chocolate 'lasanga sheets' which I'm tempted to do between the layers too!

I do a chocolate cheesecake which has a layer of cream cheese mixed with a little cream as melted chocolate. Sets quite well

Here it is!

Mix:
300g sugar
40g cornflour
½ tsp salt
750ml milk
4 egg yolks slightly beaten
50g melted unsweetened chocolate or 5 tbsp cocoa
4 tsp vanilla

This can be made in a microwave or on the hob.

If on the hob, cook over a double boiler and stir continuously. Cook until mixture thickens and boils for one minute.

In a microwave, heat for 5 minutes, stir, heat 5 minutes, stir, heat 5 minutes, stir.

Thinking about it, and reading the lasagna recipe again, I would just use this instead of adding the milk to the mix in step 4 - it will be the right consistency for what you're doing (and same amount of milk!).
