Would this casserole work cooked on hob?

Oven not working but have a fish stew to cook tomorrow - recipe is a Nigella one, basically bung everything in casserole dish and cook in oven for an hour. Any reason why I can.t just do that on a low hob in a Le Creuset with a lid on?

should be okay I would reckon

Allalonenow · 12/09/2014 23:11

Yes, I'm sure it will be fine, just like cooking fish soup.

mausmaus · 12/09/2014 23:13

should be fine. I never put a casserole in the oven.
you might need to stir in between so it doesn't catch on the bottom.

Fab thanks

Should be fine, I'd just give it the odd stir if it has flour (or anything else to thicken it) as my stupid small gas rings aren't as even heat as the oven.

It would stick if I did that with my le creuset.

If the ingredients contain anything needing longer cooking such as carrot or potato, I'd put them in first and then add the fish towards the end of the cooking time.

Redtartanshoes · 12/09/2014 23:46

Have you got a slow cooker?

DealForTheKids · 12/09/2014 23:59

I always do casseroles on the hob (oven is shite and temperamental) - do it on low and you'll be grand, just keep an eye.

boxofshells · 13/09/2014 00:00

Not got slow cooker.

Ingredients are celery, onion, carrots, fish stock, tinned tomatoes, butter beans and white wine plus whatever fish you want.

I make a fish stew with almost the same ingredients (mine also has a few new potatoes, leeks, coriander seed and or saffron, and orange peel! And broad beans not butter beans).

It works fine on the stove top but careful not to overcook it. Put the fish in towards the end, when the veg and sauce has softened and cooked down, and continue on a very gentle heat until the fish is done. It will only take a few minutes.

Ignore that stray exclamation mark. Orange peel isn't that much of a surprise.
