How do I prepare ginger

I'm trying a new recipe tonight that says to peel and finly chop ginger. How do I peel it? Do I just peel the skin away with my fingers?

Sorry if it's a stupid question but I've never used ginger before.

I think when I've used it before I've peeled it ike a carrot or something - with a sharp knife. I don't think the skin comes off very easily.

It usually needs cutting away with a paring knife or swivel veggie peeler IME sweetheart.

I usually use a potato peeler, or a sharp knife, skin is kind of dry, the inside of the ginger is a bit wetter and slightly darker in colour I think. HTH
