Ok, we had too many pears going off.

So I decided to make a pear cake, did peeling and grating, only to find the "nearly off" pears were mostly off, and the "probably ripe" pears were a disgusting mess. Oh, and this weeks' pears were rock hard.

Fine, so I had not-enough peeled pears. Which I then added a bunch of mashed banana too, and some brown sugar (recipe says white).

I then went completely amuck, using 2 whole eggs instead of 4 egg whites. Used almonds instead of pecans, and 50/50 brown/white flour rather than just white.

Oh, and am not cooking it in a bundt tin, as haven't got one, am using loaf tins.

So I have no idea how this cake will come out ... smells ok though ...

Good luck! That reminded me of this recipe that I picked up in Waitrose but haven't yet got round to trying. Sounds lovely though.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 11:50

Hmm, that one looks a bit scary.

The one I was starting from was this one. The reviews say it comes up too spicy, but that's fine, with pear and banana in, maybe I want it to be a spice cake, rather than a pear cake, anyway.

That sounds lovely. I have tried this recipe a couple of times - it's gorgeous, but a bit time consuming (mostly because I'm very slow at peeling and cutting up the pears).

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 12:06

Oh, I was thinking of trying to make a crumble, but then forgot, whoops.

Well, I have some spare apples, maybe I'll do an apple one.

That pear crumble recipe looks good, though.

The cake is smelling v good and rising well, so looks like it worked!

Made a chocolate lime cake (like the sweets) yesterday fro Dh to take to work, then his boss got the sack so he didn;t think it was subtle LOL! (not that he was dissapointed you understand- didn't want to give the wrong message is all). Lovely. hang on, shall get recipe, based on a Nigella one:

125g unsalted butter; 100g dark choc in pieces; 300g decent quality lime marmalade; 150g caster; pinch salt; 2 large beaten eggs; 150g self raising

you an repace lime marmalde with ordinary marmalde for choc ornage cake, (thatwas the originalr eceipe) or jam- apricot is nice

180 degrees celsius / gm 4

melt butter in pan; add choc then quickly remove from heat, stir until choc melted and completely combined. Annd marmalade, sugar, salt and eggs: combine. beat in flour bit by bit. Put in tin, bake for about 50 mins.

Easy, and always works for me- love playng with different flavourings. The choc lime smelled divine though - complete nostalgia LOL!

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 12:19

I have no idea what sweets you're talking about! Choc orange sound good, though.

Oooh, I bought some dried mango with lime pickle and white choc, and really loved them, but actually just want dried mango with lime pickle really. Chilli limi pickle? Something like that ...

MamaG · 19/09/2006 12:19

that sounds gorgeous peachy, was it just like a "normal" cake in texture etc? Got visions of a rock hard cake sized chocolate lime...!

MamaG · 19/09/2006 12:20

NQC have you got hte cake out of hte oven yet?

MamaG · 19/09/2006 12:22

NQC, while you are about, themoon66 told me to ask you what a dirty sanchez is

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 12:32

Cake still in the oven. It was looking done, but still v wet in the middle. I do a lot of fruity wholesome cakes, and slightly wet in the middle is good, but soaking is no good at all. Turned heat down, and am leaving it longer.

I'm not explaining dirty sanchez on a thread about food, are you mad?

OP posts:
MamaG · 19/09/2006 12:34

not mad....just don't know what it is

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 12:40

You probably don't want to know, it's gross, and kinda racially offensive. But here's a link explaining it.

yes it's a normal cake, very rich and lovely with cream as pudding would imagine. But fine with a cuppa too.

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 19/09/2006 13:12

Now that was one bad link LOL

here

FrannyandZooey · 19/09/2006 13:19

NQC is there no thread that you can't defile with your filthy sex talk

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 13:50

F&Z! I did not start the dirty sex talk! It is entirely MamaG's fault.

The cake came out very well, very tasty, really more of a spice cake than anything else, but I quite like spice cakes, so, win all around.

Also, I tried putting lots of butter on the pans, and then putting flour on top, which always sounded stupid to me, so I never did it. But guess what, it works! Cakes came out beautifully.

Oh, and thanks for the link PeachyClair, I'll have to try those sometime.

JollyRogerMamaG · 19/09/2006 20:34

Telltale

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 22:00

I'm actually a tiny bit alarmed at becoming the MN "Dirty Sanchez" woman.

Cake still popular, though, at least.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 20/09/2006 08:03

You love it, NQC

JollyRogerMamaG · 20/09/2006 14:12

I think you should change your name to NotQuiteDirtySanchezWoman

NotQuiteCockney · 20/09/2006 14:15

Ahem, F&Z was around the last time I started namechanging, and I think she was a little uncomfortable with the results ...

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 20/09/2006 19:16

LOL I thought your last name was superb NQC

oh I thought you meant NotQuiteCuntney or whatever it was, do you mean the time you pretended to be me? I was not really cross you know, just comedy crossness

NotQuiteCockney · 20/09/2006 19:39

Oh, I meant when I pretended to be you. You did seem rather ... unsettled? ... by the whole experience.
