I've got sick of most veggie mince products and have started using pulses instead.... If you buy them tinned they're as easy to cook with and much cheaper. For spaghetti bolognaise/ shepherd's pie/ lasagne I use green lentils and for chilli I use a mix of butter beans/ kidney beans/ chick peas/ cannellini beans

I detest 'fake meat'! I also use pulses, or tempeh.

Putting it in the bin and having a vegetable lasagne instead Grin

I make my own vegan 'mince' with red lentils, chopped onion, sweet potato (cook until soft), tin of tomatoes or passata, mixed herbs and a tbsp onion gravy granules mixed with a cup of water.
As my (omnivore) DS says- it's not mince. But it makes a pretty good substitute!

I like realeat as it absorbs liquid and is a bit checker,

Cornishblues · 13/08/2014 07:45

I mainly use green lentils - cooked from dried they absorb lots of wine :). We also do a chilli based on bulghar wheat cooked in tomato juice.

I have just given up using processed stuff as I felt bad doing that for my veggie dd when we were having proper food. I find lentils, pulses and mushrooms work well in most things, and much tastier.

Brilliant, thank you all. I don't think Ive tried Tempeh and never thought of using Bulgar wheat. Shock

Yet to try it but you can make your own mince substitute with walnuts and lentils...

That sounds interesting, where did you find that?
