Sides to go with 'posh hot dogs'

We have friends coming for a casual lunch. Adults and kids. I thought it would be nice to do some good quality sausages in baguettes with interesting sides. I plan to do caramelised onions and coleslaw but wanted ideas for a couple of other sides to go with. Thanks

Sounds like my DH's favourite dinner Smile

I'd do skinny fries and have French's mustard. Keep it simple.

Get proper hot dog rolls though rather than baguettes. Are you doing proper bangers or hot dog sausage things? If the latter, (which would be more authentic) we got some from Lidl that were nice. Good meat percentage

And plenty of beer!

Ooh you've made me hungry OP

If you want to make fried fries this works perfectly www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/tuscan_fries_61356

I'm always on at DH to do them!

Spicy potato wedges? I cut spuds up into large chunks, chuck them into a freezer bag with some olive oil, crushed garlic and whatever spices I have handy, give it a good shake then empty onto a baking tray and stick in the oven.

Delia's Bloody Mary tomatoes are always a nice side dish, I find.

And mustard www.frenchs.com/products/mustard/yellow-mustard

Wedges?
Bowl of green salad?
A tomato salsa of some sort?

shoppingbagsundereyes · 07/08/2014 20:23

Proper bangers, not keen on those shiny surface hot dogs. Wedges good idea although my friend does make the best wedges in the world so it'll be hard to match her standard. Like the idea of tomato salsa. My home grown ones are nearly ready. I've got some delicious home made sweet chilli jam too.

Not hot dogs then OP, just sausage baguettes Wink

Enjoy, regardless

grilled corn on cob and homemade coleslaw

Munxx · 07/08/2014 21:54

I'd get the brioche hot dog buns (M&S), actually I'm pretty sure there was a feature in the magazine about posh dogs.....may be online?

Corn on cob, chunky wedges. Yum!

CalamitouslyWrong · 07/08/2014 21:58

You can get proper hot dog sausages (big thick smoked sausages not weird shiny things in water) in most supermarkets these days. I'd do proper hot dog buns rather than baguettes too.

Sweet potato wedges would be nice. Corn on the cob. You could do a potato salad (and make your slaw a coriander and lime version rather than a mayo/sour cream type version to give different textures).

Or salad with chopped avocado, sweetcorn kernels, red onion, coriander and lime juice would be nice.

Or this ottolenghi tomato and pomegranate salad is really lovely.

Home made baked beans. V easy and delicious. You do need to start the day before though.

I'd do a proper vinegary coleslaw (not creamy), corn cobettes, potato wedges (red skinned potatoes) or an American-style potato salad, maybe candied yams.

And good condiments/sides - a tomato relish, good mustard, saurkraut and fried onions.

Yum.
