Cake competition at work... need ideas!

Basically only have a couple of muffin/cupcake trays, so ideally needs to be made in those! Don't want to do the usual red velvet etc etc. Something a bit different that isn't solely based on the icing??!

Is the competition judged on taste or presentation?

If it is taste then I can recommend this recipe. It is a slicing cake but if you scroll down she is asked if it can be made as cupcakes. I would use the filling recipe (but add icing sugar to stiffen it a bit) swirled/piped on top, with a single raspberry for decoration.

Sorry - I've just read my first post - it makes it look like I don't think your presentation is up to much that is not the case.

I meant "presentation" in terms of are they looking for spectacular iced cakes or delicious cakes.

Flourless chocolate cake. Uses ground almonds instead of flour. Delicious!
