Is sponge mixture the same as cup cake mixture?

I need to bake cupcakes for a cake sale at nursery. I am a novice baker but make a mean Victoria sponge. Can I use the same batter but just adjust the cooking time?

Yes I've make cake recipes into cupcakes before.
