1st birthday cake

I want to have a go at making a cake for my DD's first birthday - have attempted fire engine recently for DS which turned out ok but I'm a novice with roll icing and decorating in general.
I'm thinking 2 tiers, decorated with flowers and those stars on sticks. Where would I find a recipe? I've found lots of images online but nothing with step by step instructions.
Would appreciate any tips from baking experts! Many thanks.

I was told on here that I should use a Madeira cake recipie if I wanted a second tier or to add a heavy decoration. Madeira cake is firmer and can take the weight.

I was also told to wrap my fingers in cling film when dealing with roll out icing as it stops the prints. Also cover your worksurface with it!

Madeira is definitely the way to go - you can flavour it with lemon or orange zest if you want easy different flavours. If you think the top tier will be quite heavy (fondant and decorations can add up weight-wise) you can use drinking straws to give the bottom tier structure and stop the cakes sinking.
lots of ideas and instructions here
