Why does my chicken soup look as if it has curdled?

Its my first attempt at home made chicken soup, just boiled up a chicken carcass, threw in a few veggies, a touch of garlic, onion, herbs, paprika etc and it looks awful, tastes good though.

How do I make it look better?

You need to skim the scum off the top as it starts to boil next time, more will form but keep skimming and it will go

Ahhhh, I see, thanks for the tip - I made it in the slow cooker thinking it would be ok.

It will be ok to eat though?

Can you tell I am a rubbish cook?

Yes should be fine

If it looks horrid then zizz it up with a hand blender thing or put it in the blender.

Though I must say what you have made sounds to me like stock!

noddyholder · 14/09/2006 17:06

You need to add more to it or like CD says it might be just stock Do you have any lentils barley or potato and keep skimming the top off

Squirrel3 · 14/09/2006 17:30

I am so rubbish, maybe I should whizz it up or throw it away and start again.

Spag Bol for tea this evening then.

NO just chop up a few veggies into biggish cubes and chuck them in, and something else like rice or pasta would bulk it a bit

CountessDracula · 14/09/2006 17:46

maybe you should try a recipe next time
Honestly you are not rubbish!

yes, rice ir pasta like cd says will act as a thickening agent

Squirrel3 · 15/09/2006 08:48

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, I added more veg and pasta as suggested, made some bread (I can do that just about - but only because I have a bread-maker lol) it was fine! Dp enjoyed it, told me it was really nice, although he could have just been 'humouring' me.

Ok, so who has got a good recipe for chicken soup then?

squirrel3

i do the following

if in slow cooker

chicken pieces
couple of onions
couple of carrots chopped
water and a stock cube.

you could add cerely or leek at this point if liked

skim any bits from the surface

when nearly cooked i add frozen peas and sweetcorn and some pasta. I also take chicken of the bone at this point as dh wont eat meat of a bone.

this is more of a light chicken soup

If it is more wintery i add a couple of handfuls of rice or pearl barley at the start and i might do in the oven and finish with thyme dumpings. as this is a bit more feeling.

i then i freeze any leftovers in either child size dinners or as another meal.

Thank you lizziemun, I'll try it next time.
