Homemade baked beans

DD is a fussy toddler and while we were in the UK took a liking to baked beans, now called Orange Beans.

We're back in the US and she keeps asking for Orange Beans - I'm not about to spend a fortune in the forrin food aisle and also they're a bit packed with sugar aren't they? She generally likes beans and pulses but anyone got a recipe for baked beans as similar as poss to Heinz? Pref without 5tblspns of sugar....

I've made these before (I used tinned cannellini beans rather than soaking dried ones)

They are not sweet like Heinz though. More worthy.

I make boston baked beans sometimes, they are super cheap if you soak your own dried haricot beans. Basic recipe:

Put beans in dish. Add chopped tomatoes, lots of Worcestershire sauce and some dark brown soft sugar (muscavado) or some black treacle. Can add onions and garlic too. Bake for at least 2 hours on low heat.

They are lovely but obviously still quite sweet. I guess you could reduce the sugar right down but then you'd lose the salty/sweet-molasses contrast.

thanks both - will give the boston ones a go and graduated her away from the sugar!

Yeh they sound much better! I might try them for DD.
