Tell the truth, when you are in a supermarket, do you check out other people's trollies, and feel slightly smug????

I do! I can't help it! I'm all judgemental, but at least silently so. If I see sunny delight and a 6 pack of 2l coca cola, I can't help but feel superior!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nope - far too busy doing my shopping and getting home again.

MrsSpoon · 13/09/2006 23:04

Saltire, many people in Dundee are just plain odd anyway. Perhaps it was a new diet they had heard about.

I love having a nose in people's trolley's at the supermarket. It is one of the disadvantages of internet shopping. I think Tesco should offer a nosey beggar's button where someone's basket will be selected at random so we can have a look.

The other week I was in Iceland (I have one near me it is handy for milk and butter) and a man in front of me had an entire trolley full of horrible looking ready meals/frozen chips. Think he had about of month's worth, absolutely vile, felt quite sick looking at it all.

themoon66 · 13/09/2006 23:09

I never think to look at other people's trolleys tbh. But now I know that you lot do, am wondering what image I conjur up with my trolley full of wine and lager

loobylooby · 13/09/2006 23:11

Must admit chuckling to myself when I bumped into somebody from my 1st parentcraft class who despite efforts to be friendly with her was never very interested and always made excuses. My theory was that she was a complete snob who disaproved of my partner who is a househusband (hers is a city slicker) and probably thought we were too "common" for her. On the day I bumped into her in the supermarket, I was shopping for my daughter's birthday party (unbeknown to her) and my trolley laden with fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets, biscuits and large quantities of alcohol. I could see her sneering into its midst, which tickled me no end!

MrsSpoon · 13/09/2006 23:13

Can I just add that my DH was in the supermarket the other day stocking up his bar (?), he had five bottles of spirits, a crate of beer, a crate of cider, six bottles of wine and a big bottle of champagne (the champers is a present for someone). He got some very odd looks and some comments from other customers.

themoon66 · 13/09/2006 23:20

MrsSpoon... am starting to think I'd be better off doing my weekly big shop in Threshers

jasper · 13/09/2006 23:22

yes!

Tortington · 14/09/2006 00:27

no. i quite frankly couldn't give a flying fuck what other people have in their trolly. i try not to be judgemental. i fail - but i do try. however in this case it wouldnt cross my mind.

sometimes i think - oh i be they live alone - or - oh i think they must have lots of cats, or oh..i wonder if she is a mumsnetter.

but i never feel superior.

handlemecarefully · 14/09/2006 00:37

I do have a quick shufty, but disappointingly find that most people's shopping is fairly unremarkable, and that many people have, for eg, a lot of fruit and veg these days.

Perhaps they are like me and most of it lies mouldering in the fridge - full of good intention but not so great on the delivery!

Blondilocks · 15/09/2006 19:16

lol loobylooby! I did LO party shopping today! (There was someone else there who was obviously having a bigger, more grownup party!)

What I really can't stand is seeing children eating & drinking stuff while going round the supermarket & before paying for it.

trice · 15/09/2006 20:06

I bought a trolley full of lard when we were making bird cakes at playgroup. and some condoms. which unfortunately meant that I was far too embarrased to claim back my expenses from the vicar.

The check out persons eyes boggled.

Toady · 15/09/2006 21:22

I hate supermarkets and buy locally but every three weeks or so I have to go and stock up at Lidls on the basics and booze.

The other week I had bought, 6 bottles of red wine, 8 rum and limes, and a case of small beers, and a bottle of vodka .

For some bizzare reason I stood them all up on the checkout. The boy at the till then pressed the button quickly so the whole thing jerked forward. Every bottle went over and everybody turned and looked .

Beauregard · 15/09/2006 21:24

I check out other peoples recycling boxes
e.g"oh look at all the beer cans and wine bottles in there"

Twinkie1 · 15/09/2006 21:26

No can't see anyone elses on the web!!!

I don;t do supermarkets at all and have to be satisfied with looking at the other heavy drinkers recycling bins in the street - DH and I are real lightweights compared to next door who drink M&S beer - lots and lots of it must cost them bundles!!!

ilovecaboose · 15/09/2006 21:36

Yes I do and I also feel they are judging me cos I don't get my fruit and veg from there so none or very little in my trolley.

Remember going shopping with a friend's mum once for booze for a party. She bought several bottles of vodka and a packet of cornflakes - was convinced everyone would think she was an alky

aaronsmummy · 15/09/2006 21:37

No I don't, I shop with 3 small children, one of whom has asd so don't have the time. I do worry though that the amount of food wasted in our house could feed a whole community in a third world country.

I think as a nation we are obsessed with food.

Blondilocks · 17/09/2006 13:37

You'd love my recycling box then pelvicfloornomore. It's only a fortnightly collection and the box is usually full of wine bottles, beer cans & jars so the newspapers can't fit in it. Mind you it's not much bigger than a 6 pack wine box thing.

Blu · 17/09/2006 13:43

I peer into trolleys - not to be smugmental but because I'm so nosey. I while away the queue time trying to guess what social occasion they are shopping for, who lives in the household, etc, and worrying that everyone else seems to buy far more cleaning products than I ever do!

BettySpaghetti · 17/09/2006 13:45

I always feel like telling everyone " I know that theres no fruit and veg in this trolley -thats because I buy it from the fruit and veg shop not because we don't eat any".

Maybe I should make a little sign saying just that to go on my trolley.

Seashells · 17/09/2006 13:48

I do it when it's all going down the conveyer belt thingy. I always feel smug when I have a healthy good shopping, but like poop when we're skint and have a trolley full of tesco value junk.

LittleSarah · 17/09/2006 14:16

Nope.

I usually look in my own and feel fairly happy I have a good balance of stuff for me and dd but I am only interested in other people's if it is really OTT or weird.

Wouldn't like to feel happy or smug comparing mine to others as I have no idea of their lifestyle. (Also because I don't like the idea of people judging me on my basket)!!

Blondilocks · 17/09/2006 18:24

I do it more out of noseyness that anything else. Don't really care what other people buy - as you say you don't know if they shop in many places or if they have special dietary requirements.

kittylette · 17/09/2006 18:37

whats the point,

just concentrate on your own trolley

as long as you have healthy food for your kids why bother with other peoples,

i cant stand judgemental people

theres many reasons for people buying things - somedays ill do a big fresh shop - have a trolly full of veg, fruit, wholemeal pittas, ect

3 days later ill be back coz im dying for a bottle of rose and a big tub of chocolate!!

I generally don't pay much attention to other people's baskets/trollies, but I remember thinking that I wouldn't want to share a lift with the man in front of me at the checkout who was buying 5 large, glass jars of saurkraut and 2 six-packs of brown ale. [trapped wind emoticon]
