Do you stick to the 'rules'?
I opened salsa and sour cream for fajitas two weeks ago tomorrow, and haven't got around to making anything to use them with since. Do I have to chuck them tomorrow or will they last if I do something with later in the week / weekend?

Keep them but give them a sniff before using.

To paraphrase my spiritual leader Captain Barbossa.... 'Use within dates are more what you'd call ... guidelines... than actual rules. Arrrr!'

It they taste acidic and have fur growing on them, I would chuck, otherwise probably OK.

Sniff it.

Salsa keeps for ages unless it goes mouldy. Sour cream is already sour so hard to tell but again I would go by mould.
