Neeko - try mixing a bit with some Greek yoghurt and using it as a salad dressing!

Neeko · 30/01/2015 21:32

Will do Holmes. Thanks. How are you?

Cantdothisagain · 31/01/2015 18:43

Mmm - another healthy hit was broccoli pesto today. Broccoli blitzed with olive oil, pumpkin seeds, garlic, lemon juice and basil leaves - it's really nice!

That sounds delicious Smile

stilllearnin · 31/01/2015 21:21

that does so good! so rough quantities? and do you roast the seeds. short I am up and down, (so an improvement!).I'll look into that, thanks.

Cantdothisagain · 31/01/2015 21:35

No seed roasting needed- will post quantities tomorrow. Stunningly easy and delicious- and recipe says it keeps in fridge for 5 days...

stilllearnin · 31/01/2015 22:02

all my favourite things in a recipe! thanks

Cantdothisagain · 01/02/2015 08:53

Hi Still, it's 120g broccoli, 30g basil leaves, 40g pumpkin seeds, 1 small clove garlic, 4 tbsp olive oil and juice of 1/2 lemon (though I needed more). Blitz in a food processor or blender or use pestle and mortar.

Keeps in fridge for up to a week apparently. Yum!

stilllearnin · 01/02/2015 10:20

That looks great, thanks! I've written it in my recipe notebook Smile

Bramshott · 02/02/2015 10:32

Do you cook the broccoli first?

Cantdothisagain · 02/02/2015 11:37

No, broccoli stays raw - it's very green...

Bramshott · 02/02/2015 12:14

Ooh - healthy! Thanks.

Currently simmering the yoghurt & barley soup from Saturday's guardian cook supplement....

Cantdothisagain · 02/02/2015 13:05

I'm still eating it and need to keep adding oil/lemon so not that healthy!

That soup looks good.

Bramshott · 02/02/2015 18:06

Hmm, well the soup tasted nice but was VERY thick - more like a stew than a soup. Might water it down a bit but worried about diluting the taste....

Neeko · 02/02/2015 20:54

I'm converted to Harissa! I had it with stir fried peppers, onion and kale tonight. It was yummy as were the smoked haddock fish cakes I bought from sainsbury's.

stilllearnin · 03/02/2015 22:27

I mentioned broccoli pesto to the dc but they asked for the broc and ginger soup! By the way I put my dd on a gluten free diet for a few weeks before christmas. She has a big tummy and it practically disappeared. She also has a bit of toilet problem (in that she has accidents, poor thing) and that completely stopped. I think really it is a wheat thing as we overdid that when she was younger. She is kicking against it tho, eventho I tell her its no big thing - so I will have to be a bit devious!

shortaris1 · 10/02/2015 20:20

How we doing ladies?
Next recipe for me is Buckwheat pancakes from the new Hairy Bikers Good Eating book which I got for Christmas. Il let you know how they taste!

Bramshott · 11/02/2015 10:28

We have been quiet haven't we? Must all be hibernating!

I cooked a lovely sausage and bean hotpot in the slow cooker with 2 types of lentils and pearl barley in (it was a recipe from the Mumsnet recipes section). It was lovely, but even nicer yesterday when we had the left over bean/lentil/barley stuff with freshly cooked sausages. They went a bit too soft and 'mushy' in the slow cooker.

I won't do that Guardian barley & yoghurt soup again I think - far too thick!

How is everyone else doing? Have you been managing to get out and about it bit more still? Hope your mood is slowly improving.

We are having our bathroom ripped out and refitted tomorrow! Give me strength...

stilllearnin · 12/02/2015 23:35

Strength and a bucket if I remember my last bathroom redo experience (and I was pregnant). Well I have the all clear on my knee probs so as long as I go carefully I can get out a lot more. I am up and down really. But with my knee working I'd like to capitalise on feeling grateful to my body by treating it well - that's pretty tied up with the eating betterer stuff for me. The Xmas hiatus does seem quite prolonged on this thread eh?

Did anyone see the guardian recipe for (basically) kale pesto. reckon I'll give that a go next. (ds was in the gig guide so we lashed out on the actual paper rather than the free app). Smile

stilllearnin · 12/02/2015 23:37

Oh I'm tempted by a slow cooker - is it worth it for a family of veggies?

shortaris1 · 17/02/2015 12:34

Looked up the kale pesto Still. Looks fab. Take it easy with the other stuff. No idea about veggie slow cooker stuff but I like mine for chillies and curries in the winter. Dead handy to just stick on and you can do what needs doing, knowing that you're coming home/getting up to decent food.

Hope your bathroom rejig went ok Bramshott. What a palaver.

Buckwheat pancakes didn't work. Think my egg was too wee so I'll use two next time to bring it together. Did Jamie's one cup pancakes today for pancake day. Got batter left so that's a weekend brekkie sorted.

It's very quiet on here.

Bramshott · 18/02/2015 10:15

Currently on day 4 of bathroom refit shenanigans and bathroom man is taking off half the tiles he's already put up as the shower screen didn't fit....

I am loving our slow cooker, and I'm sure there are lots of lovely veggie dishes you could do in it. It's true that one of the benefits is the very tender meat (even cheap cuts), but I also love the fact that you can just bung it on and not think about it until later, an there's no danger of overcooking.

stilllearnin · 21/02/2015 10:42

How is the new bathroom Bram? all done??

Because I work from home I was thinking exactly that I could prep at lunchtime and it would be ready for the dinner while i am still working. I notice that they're not that expensive but I am loathe to clutter up the kitchen when I rejected a spiraliser in favour of a julienne peeler (also ace)

I have had a bit of a resurgence of trying new recipes as I am recommitting to eating betterer as a way of life. We had fennel soup yesterday, and then asparagus quiche really a baked omelette and then oven baked ratatouille really roasted veg

I used 4oz of cheese in the quiche and still too much (and I am a cheese addict) and I used a dribble of oil on the veg as had run out! reminded me that ovenbaked baby plum tomatoes are the best thing ever! Next time I will be more adventurous with the flavours too. I love rose elliott and was brought up on her, but it does seem old fashioned now

Having said that today will be good old fashioned Rose's red lentil and tomato sauce on spaghetti - kids' favourite Smile

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 21/02/2015 17:17

I tried Red Lentil and Potato Hotpot last week. On another food thread somebody mentioned Lentil Bake, it sounded interesting so I googled recipes.

It was so delicious!! I added a layer of carrots and a layer of brocolli. I increased the stock quite a bit too.
