Did the banana peanut butter pancakes again today, with fresh mango. Sleep - I didn't really use a specific recipe but browsed a few online. Today I mashed one and a half small bananas, then stirred in one egg, a large tablespoon of peanut butter, and about a tablespoon of flour and a teaspoon of baking powder. This was less PB than last time and DD preferred it - I think because it was more banana-y and therefore sweeter.

I cook it in tablespoonfuls BTW, so they are like little blinis, very cute!

I'll keep messing around with the ingredients though, for example I'm thinking of putting in some ground almond and DD wants to try putting mango in the batter next time!

Speaking of ground almond, I was thinking of mixing a little into DS' yoghurt - could I do this without him noticing do you think :o

stilllearnin · 11/09/2014 20:43

Haywire it wasn't me with the overnight oats although I have done this before - I think it was sleep! (I managed to do 5.5 k today by the way - I absolutely knackered my heel pads a few years ago falling down the stairs with a mini stroke so I'm increasing very slowly)

We had hot hummus today (can never be bothered to find out the proper spelling). Oh my word it was lovely and the kids loved it! (did not tell DH it has butter in- he is phobic about this)

Haywire · 11/09/2014 20:57

Oh yes you are right sorry and thanks to sleep for overnight oats.

Hot hummus sounds very interesting what did you serve it with?

Well done on 5.5k particularly given your injury. I did 6k wed morning but in am so slow it took me 45 min!

Haywire · 11/09/2014 21:12

Tried quinoa today for first time (having a bit of a try new stuff week) it was good. Kinda like cous cous but tastier.

I have a 6 yr old and 19 month old and have very varied success or not in getting them to eat healthy food. Dd1 has always been very finicky although eats a good range has been very reluctant to try new things. Dd2 is utterly unpredictable in what she will/ won't eat from day to day. Banana pancakes sound like a good one to try.

stilllearnin · 11/09/2014 21:45

That isn't slow at all - took me 36 mins this am to do 5.5k. So id hope to do 6k in something like 43 mins. Not quick but ok.

Hummus was an observer recipe - basically hummus with yoghurt mixed in then toast pine nuts, add melted butter to the nuts, pour over the hummus and bake in the oven. I'm afraid I forgot we'd need something with it so I toasted pitta bread, did a bit of bulgar wheat, and salad.

holmessweetholmes · 12/09/2014 20:24

Not so slow! Anyway, as it said on the back of someone's t-shirt at Parkrun the other week 'Slow miles are better than no miles!' I liked that. I've never got much faster in my few years of running, but I've definitely got fitter and slimmer!

The news here is... the doc seems to have actually cured my hives! He, like the others before, said it probably isn't caused by food at all (although booze and unhealthy stuff might exacerbate it). He's put me on a different antihistamine and also Zantac (which is normally used as an antacid but also works on a secondary set of histamine receptors in the gut, apparently). Took my first dose this morning and bam! No more hives (so far)! Hopefully I can gradually wean myself off the tablets in a few weeks and see if they've broken the cycle.
Now all I have to do is resist going back to eating/drinking the bad stuff I've been denying myself Grin . And get back to posting things which are more relevant to the spirit of the thread instead of bemoaning my blotchiness!

stilllearnin · 12/09/2014 21:06

Fantastic news Holmes - I bet you feel great. In honour of you keeping on the straight and narrow I won't post about the lovely apple and ginger cake I made last night.

Haywire · 12/09/2014 21:45

Ha Holmes love the slow miles thing! Think I am probably a bit hard on myself as DH is an awesome runner. He did 13 mile hill race a race a few weeks ago with 1400ft climb!

Great news about the hives, think I said before anti-histamine only thing that stopped my Dh's when he had a hive attack. He had to take them for quite a while though

Mmm apple and ginger cake sounds good Stilllearnin.

holmessweetholmes · 12/09/2014 21:58

Yes the weird thing is though, I've been taking antihistamines this whole time, and they have become less and less effective. Then this bizarre combination of antihistamine and zantac seems to work. Hey ho!

I understand what you mean about the running and being hard on yourself! I have one of those husbands too. Triathlete, ex-water polo player. I think he considers my running pace yo be a brisk walk Grin.

I have eaten too much sugary stuff today in celebration of being blotch-free. Feeling a bit bleurgh now!

holmessweetholmes · 14/09/2014 22:26

Hello Eatbetterers! Back to the healthily nourishing myself tomorrow after a weekend of indulgence while dh was home for his birthday.
What are we all going to be eating this week?

I fancy some autumnal soup making. What are your favourite soups, everyone?

AmericasTorturedBrow · 15/09/2014 02:29

Yay to Holmes, good news indeed

Good eating has gone out the window the last week as I've had friends here and it's been TOTM so I've been indulging and had a few night time binges - seriously wondering if I should attend an over eaters anonymous meeting Sad

Cycled 35miles today with DH, first decent ride in months and I'm supposed to be doing a sprint tri in a month and I feel fat and unfit. Double Sad

Friends leave weds, I'm abstaining from alcohol now til the tri and sugar too. Had the most awful stomach cramps today and I think it's just the overeating. My off switch has disappeared.

Leftover bbq'd sweet potato an corn from this weekend so will be turning it into soup for the week

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 10:13

Great news Holmes what a relief! Smile

Americas Sad - if you don't mind me saying, you seem to be falling into the all or nothing trap...the very thing that leads to the binges. Rather than saying no sugar for a month, give yourself permission to have something sweet once a day if you really want it. And a drink on Friday/Saturday (again if you really want one). It will hopefully make things much more relaxed and manageable. What are your motivations for the tri?

Bramshott · 15/09/2014 10:21

Mmm - soup! Anything squash-based has got to be my favourite. I do squash and sage, squash and chorizo, squash, tomato and chickpea, and my standard "bung everything in along with a bit of manky cabbage"! I love split peas in soup too - they make it really velvety and filling.

I made the jam yesterday. Decided in the end that I wasn't brave enough to try the sugar free one first time, especially as it's mostly for the DDs! So I followed a standard recipe and just reduced the sugar a bit (1kg down to 700g). It tasted good, has only fruit, sugar and water in, and the DDs seem to like it. I think next time I'd be even bolder with the sugar reduction and reduce it by half (it was a small batch, so shouldn't go off before it gets eaten).

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 11:21

OK - I am going to make soup too now Grin. I made the Hemsley Hemsley shoulder of lamb with anchovies, with the roast potatoes tomatoes and onions from Anna Jones - added some steamed green beans for a very easy and really delicious Sunday lunch that even the DC's ate Smile. I am going to use the bone from the lamb to make stock for soup (I need it, I have my first cold this year Sad) and the leftover lamb to do shepherds pie with sweet potato topping.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/09/2014 13:38

Hello folksSmile

I'm still struggling but plodding away, at least I'm walking again and managed 3 miles at the beginning of the week which is amazing considering at xmas I could barely walk ten minutes!

I'm making huge strides with ds, he's started high school and doesn't have lunch until 1.40 so needs a big breakfast and after ages of declaring eggs 'horrible' he's been wolfing down scrambled eggs on whole meal toast and fried eggs and baconGrin this is the little boy who would man about half a bowl of cornflakes!

My mum just pissed me off as she came for lunch yesterday and ds was really trying it on about not eating his veg, properly on the wind up. He actually eats lots of salads but hates broccoli so I'd only given him a bit and he was even moaning about that-tbh he'd have moaned about anything the mood he was in. Mum called in just now and declared that 'someone really needs to have a word with him about veg eating'Hmm

I told her to knock herself out if she thought she could do a better job than me!

He's 13,I can't over nag him or he'll just shut down,I need to lead by example and go softly softly.

Rant overBlush Grin

Mmm - liking the sound of your squash-based soups, Bramshott! I need some soothing soups and calming herbal teas, I think. Not only am I waiting impatiently to exchange contracts on our move, I am also about to put our name down for a puppy .

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/09/2014 16:54

I have a squash on the counter, can I have a nice soup recipe please?Smile

Don't mind you saying so at all sleep, I've always been a binge eater sadly but it's never tipped over into making me overweight or an eating disorder an I've never purged or starved myself. Part of the Eating Betterer is to try to control that uncontrollable urge when it comes because it frankly just makes me feel shit afterwards, physically and emotionally.

The motivation for the tri is exercise, I hate the gym, hate formal exercise of any sort. The last two years my fitness has been the bet it's ever been as I've trained to do a long distance bike ride each summer and I love it. It's a big time and fundraising commitment though so I'm taking a break this year and doing a few sprint tris is a way to keep my motivation up to exercise, if I don't have something to work towards then I don't bother. I each summer I drop sugar and alcohol the month before my big ride just to help my body in the final stage of training so that's what I'm doing now as the tri is under a month away - I'll be back to both (in moderation) after October 12th.

I'm 31 and my dad just got diagnosed with a heart condition so I'm trying to get into good exercising habits now as it's all made me a bit more aware of my own mortality

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 17:30

Sorry to hear about your DF Americas - apart from the fitness it's maybe also a good incentive to pack as much pleasure into life as well too (not waste it battling food and body as so many of us do). If you'd like a bit of coaching or just recommended reading re the bingeing I'd be happy to chat/email, pm me Smile.

Dame cut the squash in half and throw in a roasting tin with some chopped red chillies and quartered red onions if you have some...olive oil and seasoning, roast til squash is soft. Allow to cool til you can handle it, then scoop the flesh from the skin of the squash and add it, along with the onion etc, to a pan of chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Blitz, add a squeeze of lime juice. Top with Greek yoghurt and roasted seeds.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/09/2014 17:47

Thanks sleepSmile

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 18:05

Oh - should say that the colour will be nicer if you fry the onion and chilli (then add stock and roast squash ) rather than roast it but it's an extra faff Smile

holmessweetholmes · 15/09/2014 18:06

Yes, dame, a puppy Grin ! I veer between extreme excitement and thinking I must be out of my mind! Now we've told the dc, it's pretty much irrevocable though...

stilllearnin · 16/09/2014 06:42

Cannot believe I have missed soup chat Grin dc's believe it is my only talent!! But I realise I've become v conservative in my cooking. It's fine and wholesome but a bit dull. I've increased my work hours and so I'm cooking in the evenings for the next day.

Americas I've had various bingeing experiences. Like you it's never tipped over into anything disorder like but honestly I've eaten stuff that is not food in my desperation! That's pretty sad but I've taken a real step forward with the mindful eating. It has transformed from a chore into a nice thing to do Smile
