Anchovy paste or equivalent

Basically, I need some for a recipe I am doing this Wednesday.

It might be me (more than likely), but I can't seem to find it in regular supermarkets, only online. Can anybody please tell me if I'm wrong about it not being in the usual supermarkets, or is it only found in other countries? What would be the equivalent here in the UK?

Sorry for so many questions. MTIA.

My Sainsbury sells a type of anchovy paste (Patum Peperium/Gentlemen's relish;: it's a special spread with spices added etc) in the same aisle as Marmite etc. There might be others there. If it's really just anchovies you need then how about buying some in oil and mushing them up yourself? I do it in a mortar and pestle after chopping them up a bit.

I've got Admiral brand from Sainsburys in the cupboard ATM, but have also used La Monegasque from Tesco.
I'd ask at Customer Services which aisle it is in, I think Sainsburys might have it in the Special & Worldwide section.

I use it for mainly for flakey pastry twists, but if I've run out of it I use Gentlemaan's Relish instead and they seem interchangeable for that. It depends what you are going to make though.

Thanks for replying Smile

It is an Italian rustic chicken casserole that I'm doing in a slow cooker.

I'd typed anchovy paste onto our tesco delivery order for this week and it didn't come up with anything, so might try again now I have a brand name. Thanks for that Smile

If all else fails, I'll use wholegrain mustard instead. Nobody need know Grin

Where are you from?

I am addicted to Peck's Ancovette Paste but have been unable to buy it in the uk for several years due to some stupid EU ruling.

I have to bring back shed loads when I go to SA.

Seems as though it is to enrich and give a bit of depth of flavour to the sauce, you could add a splash of Lee & Perrins as well as some mustard.

Enjoy!
