Meals for People with Diabetes

My Dad discovered that he has Type 2 Diabetes a few days ago.

He's a very "meat & potatoes" kinda person so we're drawing up blanks for what meals would be suitable.

Any ideas?

Try UK They do great recipes too
Try to get an appointment with a dietitian or on a local DESMOND programme (ask at your doctors) There is lots of help out there but be really careful about some stuff you read on the web

A few ideas to start, new potatoes are better than mash or jacket potatoes, and try for lowering carbohydrates in the diet and replacing whaite bread/rice/pasta with wholewheat versions.

Try and get a blood glucose monitor and get your Dad to test before meals, and again one, then two hours after eating. This will help him learn to work out which foods cause blood sugar 'spikes' for him and help him adjust his diet to get the best control of his blood sugars.

www.diabetes.co.uk is a great resource for information, and they have a section for newbies and recipes, as well as a chat forum, full of people who are very helpful and knowlegable.

Hth, it's a lot to take in at first but I found it helpful to 'take control' a bit, and start learning what was best to eat/not eat Smile
