I need it to make cornbread and I'm struggling to find any. Help!

Do you mean you can't find it in the shops? Polenta is basically the Italian word for cornmeal, and most supermarkets have that.

Also if you have a Tesco or Asda with a world food aisle, you will often find bags of cornmeal in the section with Jamaican foods.

OK, I mean they don't do it in Waitrose Blush

Bet they have polenta though!

If Waitrose ran out of polenta there would be riots.

waitrose have cornmeal.
have you looked in the 'free from' or exotic section?
polenta is yuck not the same.

claraschu · 07/06/2014 23:51

I think they call it corn flour over here, and "cornmeal" is American. Sometimes polenta is ground a bit less fine, but the polenta at Waitrose should work for corn bread.

claraschu · 07/06/2014 23:52

Or maybe corn flour is what is called corn starch in the US. I'm half asleep.

Cornflour and cornmeal are very different

exexpat · 07/06/2014 23:55

Corn flour = corn starch, I think - used for thickening things. Standard polenta is coarser ground than US cornmeal, I think, but should be OK for cornbread.

mousmous · 07/06/2014 23:56

cornflour = starch
cornmeal = flour made from maize
polenta = the gritty stuff

IHeartKingThistle · 08/06/2014 00:10

OK......I think.... thank you! I will see what I can find and report back to tell you if my cornbread was gritty or not!

It was really nice! We could only get polenta, it was quite a coarse texture but was really nice. Thanks!
