Vegan desserts?

I'm hosting a BBQ at the weekend and my vegetarian friend has just rung and said that he's been vegan for the past 3 months. Now I was going to do a banoffee pie which I obviously can't make and he said he really misses desserts so I want to make him something vegan and delicious but have no clue where to start! Does anyone have any ideas that aren't just "fruit salad". And can you get vegan icecream?

I've noticed that lots of cake and muffin recipes using vegetables (eg. beetroot, carrot, courgette, pumpkin) seem to be vegan as they use vegetable oil. You can also substitute eggs for apple juice in some recipes (and obviously reduce the sugar a bit too). I did beetroot and chocolate muffins a while ago using cocoa powder and 100% dark chocolate chunks.

And yes you can get vegan ice cream, Waitrose sell a really nice brand in a few different flavours.

Just checked and Swedish Glace is the ice cream brand.

I like the look of this

My son is allergic to dairy and eggs. This is a great brownie recipe that goes down well with non- vegans as well. You could serve it with Swedish glacé ice cream or raspberry sorbet or a fruit coulis. allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/6036/vegan-brownies.aspx

Vegan Bannofee Pie recipe

There are some really lovely vegan ice-creams on the market. Swedish Glace is the most widely available, but if you spot Booja-Booja, jump at it. It's lush.

I used to make vegan brownies with oil and no egg. They were pretty crumbly, but still delicious, especially served warm. Warm brownies and ice-cream!

You can also get ready-made things like soya dessert (essentially cold custard).

Ask him what he likes and how to make it.

I'd make this - I've made a version before. Just check that the chocolate and cocoa you use really are vegan - many contain traces.

Have you heard about Chocolate covered Katie? She is a vegan dessert blogger and there are loads of yummy and indulgent puddings on there, lots with a healthy/nutritious twist.

Would recommended this cookie pie quite American but absolutely yum!

Jus-rol puff pastry (non butter one) is vegan. I rolled it out and put on a layer of vegan marzipan, then topped with fresh peaches and brushed them with apricot jam and baked in the oven. Serve with soya cream or vegan ice cream. Easy peasy and looks impressive :-)

I cook for family including a vegan once a week and while I always cook a vegan main course I usually buy her something separate from everyone else for dessert.

We have had in the past - Cat and the Cream cupcakes, Swedish Glace and Pudology pots, flapjacks, soya chic buttons...

Or there are some great vegan cake recipes online if you want homemade but not everyone in my family likes them so I end up doing a vegan and non vegan cake usually.

Banana cake with vegan ingredients and soya milk cream with added vanilla

Rice pudding cooked with soya milk in the oven (can be separated into small portions and topped with cinnamon or mixed spice).

Another vote for booja booja :)
